How can you build a professional network in a new city?

I am involved with Celebrate Recovery both locally and as a NYS rep. The ministry reaches out to individuals with hurts, habits and hang ups to support their efforts to find healing.

Logically, moving to a new city, its need a person who is mentally strong and eager to catch up fast in networking via social media such as LinkedIn or Facebook and X to the point of a Snapchat. Also walking about with new faces as to learn new dynamics and environment of the area. Through technology it is all possible.

Alumni network is a great start. Alums are by far the most valuable in reconnecting and maintaining a professional network. Find ways to give back. Find events that align with your goals the most, platforms like eventbrite are a great place to start simply search events and signup. Tech conferences are a great place to connect and build a network. Conferences are best place to find target customers, network, partner but be careful in making sure you find the relevant one and not waste time. (Finding the right conference where you find maximum value is an art)

One time at work : New city, zero network? Joined a local "Video Hackers" meetup - boom! Collaborative genius landed 3 freelance gigs. Networking and video tech equals a win-win! In my experience : Solo coding in your apartment is cool, but local video groups fuel innovation! Diverse perspectives, shared tips, and unexpected project collabs - priceless! One thing I've found helpful: Organize your own mini-meetup! Post a casual "Coffee & Code" invite for fellow video enthusiasts. It's low-key, friendly, and sparks amazing connections. Level up your LinkedIn! Share insights from local video meetups, and offer free consultations. Show your expertise, and attract connections like magnets!

Joining the Fullerton Rotary Club was pivotal for my success in a new city. In this diverse mentorship group, composed mainly of Baby Boomers and older individuals, I gained invaluable insights into the local market. Their collective wisdom helped fill in my understanding gaps, profoundly shaping my perspective. My participation in the club was akin to joining a welcoming committee for the local economy, which helped me uphold high service performance standards. Through the club, I fostered relationships that were not only professional but also personal, built on mutual respect and shared objectives. Therefore, I firmly believe joining local organizations like the Rotary Club can greatly facilitate building a strong professional network.

We are made to serve so serve I will every day in as many ways as possible. Stay blessed my friends . Building houses ,feeding the homeless , giving time to senior citizens, playing and donating as much as possible for those in need .

I volunteer wherever I go and have lifelong friends all over the world. You get to learn about a place quickly, what people really think and you develop a sense of empathy for those in your community.

Oh yes … volunteering does get you connected to the right people believing in the same cause and that can build wonderful connections. One should look for the cause they believe in and then things get easy.

Being a volunteer helps us give and receive. I always practice giving, as it is a valuable lesson life has taught me. The more I give, the more I receive. Volunteering to help a group of artisans or people in a particular niche allows me to get to know more people and contribute to their lives and businesses. This, in turn, provides me with business opportunities in the shortest possible time. Life and business are all about giving and then receiving. Let us treat others how we would like to be treated ourselves.

It's wonderful to attend both consulting conferences like Consult2023 and mfg. sponsored trade events like Sphere2024, Merc, and LenelS2 training sessions. Staying connected with others from the industry and market specific seminars keeps us engaged and up to date with emerging technologies and opportunities to grow. Being involved with Behavioral/Mental Health organizations will help strengthen the knowledge that Mental Health Matters.

Industry events are great way to see who are the major players, competitors and presented solutions in your field of industry. I usually take only a few most interested contacts and schedule a separete meeting with them. There are shadow or after work events and those are less formal places to meet interesting people

This is the place to network. Attend, put your hand up, offer to help out. Connect afterwards on LinkedIn, stalk, talk, offer something free.

Attending industry events is a definite in my opinion. Meeting industry specific people and networking is ideal as we work in a, always evolving industry.

Attending ISC West and GSX are the places to be in the electronic security/surveillance/video industry. There are a LOT of people there, from around the world. You stay caught up on the latest trends, you get to network (of course you'll connect with them on LinkedIn!). Just don't get distracted by the "shiny things", it's easy to get distracted by the parties, and outings. Fantastic opportunity to meet up with like-minded professionals.

Expanding your online presence in a new city involves more than just LinkedIn. Consider diversifying across platforms like local professional groups, forums, and social media. Engage in conversations, share insights, and express interest in local events or industries. This multi-platform approach enhances visibility and connection-building in your new community.

Schedule your time to make sure you are doing the networking- every day! The BEST platform for professional networking is LinkedIn, but you need to participate on it, not just scroll and "like" every now and then. Make a comment, share your point of view. Give something others can learn from. Networking is a two-way street; make sure you give as much as you receive.

Proactiveness and persistence is key. Remember, being in the video surveillance or security industry, clients rely on your professional opinion. And yes, our industry is a “grudge buy” however, by simply reassuring the client of his recommended solution, he will feel at ease with the outcome. Example, security has evolved over the years as it is now used for a lot more than just seeing someone caught in the act.

Always connect people, always offer something for nothing. This builds the muscle needed to continue to connect for yourself and to find opportunities even in the leanest of times.

It is crucial to consistently pursue our objectives, just as we know that breathing is essential for our survival. In business, the act of persistently seeking opportunities is like knocking on a door - we must do it daily. By knocking on as many doors as possible, we increase our chances of finding the right one that opens up opportunities for us. Therefore, we must continue knocking until we discover the best opportunity for us.

I've done two big moves in 2 years, there have been some learnings: 1. You need to find your people. They often find you. 2. Don't look in the same place twice - cities are different, and so are the people. 3. Be open and don't expect, enjoy the difference. 4. Don't compare, it doesn't tell a good story. 5. Start by going to everything and quickly cull. 6. Be ruthless with time management. You can get sucked into things you love but don't bring in revenue - balance your life and yes, do your own timesheets, it helps to highlight where you are putting energy and what is the cost.

??The last time I moved to a new city I also happened to be immigrating to a new country. To make the most of the opportunity and hit the ground running, I connected with people who had been in a similar situation the year prior and had lessons and tips to share. Once you're settled don't forget where you came from. There are numerous organizations such as Atlas Corp where you can help host overseas fellowship applicants and give them the advice you've learned along the way. Additionally, If I see anyone from my network moving into the NYC area, I try to reach out and see if I can help with anything. Moving is stressful enough let alone moving to somewhere drastically new and a distance from where you were originally coming from. ??

Creo que no hay receta, ya que mucho depende de cómo cada uno enfrenta el desafío, lo que sí consideraría en términos generales es tener paciencia, saber administrar el tiempo, dejarse persuadir en una nueva conversación es importante, ya que cerrarse mucho incomodarás a tus pares que están conociéndote, el comparar todo también es un signo de alerta... y creo que lo más importante es tener la voluntad de abrir camino, que aunque hayan días grises tengas la voluntad de ir y caminar en frente.
