As a full-scope simulator test operator, I always introduced myself to my team as the guy who had the real-world, hands-on experience of operating the equipment that they were modeling. I told them that my job was to always point out what was wrong with their design approach and help provided proof and data to substantiate and assist in resolving the issues.

This is true. In my experience, degree qualified Plant Engineers have excellent training in the physics behind a chemical process. However, Operators and Technical staff can provide critical observations that reveal important trends. Combining these shop floor observations and insights with the degree level understanding of Plant Engineers can result in lucrative efficiency savings.

In my experience, Plant Engineers thrive or struggle depending on how easily they can obtain important information. Being able to maintain a network is key to staying informed.

I wish that I had written this down for my teams years ago. Earning respect on fast-track projects is a task in itself. That can only be accomplished by the testing lead by minimizing mistakes (near zero) when identifying errors. Whether it be supported by hard data or theoretical, corrective measures must be consistent to minimize reworking efforts.

Conflicts that I’ve experienced mainly came about in realizing that the design engineer just didn’t have the experience, wasn’t capable or up to handling the task. You firstly had to give that person a chance to perform, but as a lead on extremely complicated projects, where schedules are affected by an individual’s performance, the lead integration manager must inform management of team members that must be replaced.

Very well stated! In my position, you had to be able to handle criticism since my job depended on criticism of every I reviewed. I wasn’t hired to say how good of a job everyone had done. I had to be humble in my critiques in order to have a good working team relationship.
