Long term relationships are based on 1) mutual and reciprocal give and take. Mentor and coach should also gain from the relationship just as the coachee has 2) value add - there must be something of value - new insights, experiences and perspectives that open up growth horizons for both 3) frequency of interactions - investing effort in having regularity and reflecting on shared experiences, memories, learnings and moments help to enrich the relationships 4) going to the next level - coaches are motivated when they see their coachee a becoming successful and graduate to the next level of challenges - this tells them previous methods have been successful and now they are tackling higher level

Communication is key to any successful relationship, especially one that involves feedback, guidance, and support. Communicate with your mentor or coach regularly, and use different channels and formats, such as phone calls, emails, video chats, or face-to-face meetings. Therefore, you need to be proactive and flexible in your approach. Take initiative, seek opportunities, and apply what you learn. Be willing to try new things, experiment, and make mistakes. Learn from your experiences and reflect on your outcomes. Also, be adaptable and respectful of your mentor's or coach's availability, style, and preferences.

Your mentor or coach is investing their time, energy, and expertise in helping you succeed. They are not obligated to do so, and they may have other commitments and responsibilities. Building a long-term relationship with your mentor or coach does not mean that you have to work with them forever. However, that does not mean that you have to end the relationship abruptly or lose contact with them. You can transition the relationship to a more informal or occasional one, where you still keep in touch and update each other on your progress and challenges. You can also maintain the relationship as a friendship or a professional connection, where you can exchange ideas, information, or referrals.
