How can you build fintech skills online?

I have shared this with regulators that I have mentored, but it is very important to get along to events. Networking events, Meetups, conferences. I have met many great people, many of whom are willing to share insights and information to help you learn. In fintech, we are all learning. The technology develops rapidly. It is important to head along to events to keep abreast of developments. Connecting with good people on LinkedIn, and seeing what they are sharing is another good way to learn. I followed and connected with the Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance, and four years later found myself working there. It's very important that you're following credible sources. The Bank of International Settlements does much great work.

Yes. Agreed! We do need to collect Basic information first. I follow certain websites and pages for knowledge. For example, CFTE, World Bank, ADB and ACCA technical Papers.

The breadth and scope of fintech opens a vast space to carve a niche. The challenge is to identify what transferable skills one possesses and an area of interest where one can stand out. Credit and risk management could be your forte, or anything else, then you might consider a fintech role in lending or investing. Fintechs need engineers, data scientists, policy and regulatory experts, user research and product development professionals, and others. There is white space in Fintech. To get in, the first requirement is identifying what broad skills and competencies are needed, then a specialty, which comes from a focus area of interest.

Having a good LinkedIn community and network is helping me a lot to learn not only the basics but also the latest developments in fintech. Apart from online courses and podcasts like Fintech Insider by 11:FS or Crypto Legends by Fiat Republic, I also find relevant posts on my LinkedIn network very helpful.

There is no end to learning. Fintech is evolving and to keep up one needs continuously learning, unlearning, and relearning. The pace at which publications in the form of industry white papers, policy notes, or guidance papers are churned out supports the need to learn. Contributing to the body of knowledge is a way to learn. This can take the form of writing, participating in a working group, and providing inputs to a collaborative platform where anyone can share data or insights. From my experience, fintech offers an excellent chance to learn from others and across climes. There is a community out there that you can join to help with your learning. Where there is none, I would encourage you to go ahead and form one.

Determining what area of fintech is most interesting to you, and maps best to your experience and skills, will require some research. Speak to people already working in fintech. If you have some prior experience, it should be easier, but assuming that you've not had any experience, you may want to consider the following question. 1) Do you want to work with technology or people? If you have strong tech skills, be it cloud, systems integration, coding, whatever, you might be interested in engineering or administrator roles that map to those skills. If you prefer to work with people, you may like to consider a sales or customer success role. If you like a mix of tech and people roles, perhaps a product role might best suit you.
