How can you build an e-learning community around a specific theme?

Some communities are pretty low in interaction, rather "dead". People need good reasons to engage, the community should help them to answer pressing issues. Building an eLearning community can benefit from principles on how to build a community of practice. According to Wenger-Trayner, McDermott and Snyder (2002): 1. Design for evolution. 2. Open a dialogue between inside and outside perspectives. 3. Invite different levels of participation. 4. Develop both public and private community spaces. 5. Focus on value. 6. Combine familiarity and excitement. 7. Create a rhythm for the community.

You can't build a community if you have nothing to unite them. People seek like-minded groups. You can become a leader by bringing people together.

Ensure you are sourcing from high-quality groups, and that your off-shoot group is necessary. If there is no good reason for members of an existing community to move, they won't. It is also frowned upon to try and poach people in this way, so be aware of the etiquette in that community. First, drive engagement on a niche aspect of the community, create posts and understand trends and reactions, and then once you have a following, invite others to join a separate group about the new community.

Respect your learners. Create High-Quality Content. Develop content that is not only informative but also engaging and relevant to the theme. This could include courses, webinars, articles, and discussion prompts. Regularly updating content keeps the community dynamic and active. Avoid info dump’s.

I agree with this idea of engaging with the community. It is always a good approach to seek feedback from them, listen to them, their needs and address their valuable inputs which in turn can lead to enhancing the quality of the e-learning content. I followed this approach of engaging with the most valuable professionals (MVPs) in the automation field and seeking their contribution to answer queries from our learners, provide assistance when needed especially for a hands-on assignment or challenge provided in the course. This leads to engagement, interaction, knowledge transfer, a thread conversation on a particular topic which can help some new or already existing learners. It can also be a source of inspiration to other learners.

I find that promoting a sense of belonging is the most important part in this step. Create an inclusive environment where all members feel valued and heard. Celebrate successes, acknowledge contributions, and encourage diverse perspectives.
