How can you build confidence in managing remote teams?

Trust your team. It's important to trust your team members to do their jobs well. Give them the autonomy and flexibility they need to be successful, It takes time to build trust and rapport with a remote team. Be patient and understanding, and celebrate your team's successes along the way.

Managing local or remote teams requires many of the same core skills (setting expectations, lead by example, holding associates accountable...) but those skills need to be deployed more thoughtfully. It is easy to work 24/7/365 from the spare bedroom, but if you do that, you team will think that is your expectation of them. Also, figure out how people like to communicate: a quick IM or a scheduled meeting? Communicate how they want, not how you want. Finally, be ready to deal with distractions from kids, pets, doorbells, etc... people are in their homes; the environment is different from the office. Associates are still eager to deliver, but leaders need to recognize the unique challenges and opportunities that remote work brings.

Relationships and context. I live by these passionately. If you don't do either, you'll get drones. This is tough enough in person, terrible if the team is remote. You have to build that relationship with your team. Connect with them even if it's just a call with no purpose, give them a platform and opportunity to talk about themselves and genuinely get to know them. Establishing a relationship makes it easier to communicate effectively and openly, both ways. Also make sure there's a structured system and communicate expectations, provide the necessary tools, and take the time to explain purpose and role whether in a specific project or overall.

The past few years opened many new ways for us to think and redefine how we work. One of those and the most discussed one is remote working which opens a wide perspective for everyone to look at. Team bonding and understanding on each member of the team is very imp while working in teams to deliver the outcome however nowadays this also is happening over the screen where the physical touch is missing. In my opinion a few imp points which could help in the same are: 1. Defining clear expectations and discussing the same openly with the teammates 2. Continuous support by effective monitoring and feedback sharing 3. Developing a culture of fun meetings at least once a month over a catch-up(personal or over a VC) 4. Trust and support each other

For me i believe the satisfaction of the job well done does it. In an instance where one manages a large number of subordinates, goals achieved will boost that confidence to manage them whereas confidence in team members would also grow so as to take on more challenging tasks.

3 things to help kick start effective working practices: - Trust - provide the tools and confidence for teams to make things happen. Most importantly, the freedom to then do things. - Communication - regular, at set times and adhoc. If you are only communicating during designated times, this may not build the best 'one team' approach - Cognitive Diversity - has your team been created for cultural-fit or cultural-add. If the former, you may be communicating into an echo chamber. Diversity of thought improves efficiency and cohesion.

Building confidence in managing remote teams involves a combination of skills, communication, and leadership. We need to establish and maintain clear lines of communication. Use various tools (email, chat, video calls) and set expectations for response times and communication channels.We also need to Schedule regular one-on-one and team meetings to discuss progress, address concerns, and maintain a sense of connection among team members. Trust is a crucial aspect of remote team management as well. Give your team autonomy and let them take ownership of their work. Micromanagement can erode confidence.

It is true that regular communication plays an important role to effective remote team management. By applying a variety of communication methods, remote team can experience efficient management and operation as well. Therefore, I think companies' CEOs should keep this in mind.

In a remote environment, I try to err on the side of "too much" gratitude and recognition. This is because I don't have a way to tell people directly in person how thankful I am for the work they did on [x] project. Without the natural ability to chat in passing in an office environment, I think the onus is on managers to make sure that the people they work with know their contributions matter, are impactful and most importantly, are seen across the org. Otherwise, sometimes remote work feels like you're completely disconnected and working in a bubble; this can ultimately lead to job dissatisfaction, decreased productivity or work quality, or looking elsewhere.

To increase the effectiveness of your positive feedback, try providing a specific example of what they did well. One way to dig a little deeper is to ask yourself WHY you are providing the positive feedback. For example, “You gave a great training today!” could be “I appreciated the questions you asked during the training today. They really got me thinking about the ways in which we can improve xyz.”

My current management team never fails to go even one day without telling their staff and other departments around us how they appreciate all we do. I believe that helped open the conversation and trust windows which open the communication between us all.

People who feel seen and heard at work, when their minor accomplishments are acknowledged as well as their major, they feel more confident in their role and with working with you. It often provides the intrinsic motivation and incentive to want to do more. Make sure any and all feedback is genuine and that their strengths are mentioned first before offering constructive criticism. Allow time for them to reflect on the feedback and then discuss it with you. Always offer opportunities for growth. If you provide informal feedback often, employees will not be anxious about or surprised by formal evaluation results. They will normally have met or exceeded expectations. People care about what you inspect, not what you expect.

I totally agree with this. Collaboration within remote team members brings the virtual to reality. It also create opportunities of learning more about each team member. This in turn fosters an atmosphere of trust which promotes mental wellbeing and in turn enhances the team's productivity, quality and satisfaction.

Promoting personal and professional growth in your remote team is vital. Understand each member's strengths, weaknesses, interests, and aspirations. Provide learning opportunities like courses, webinars, and mentoring. Encourage work-life balance, breaks, exercise, and socializing. This investment enhances performance, loyalty, and retention, fostering a culture of continuous success in both your local teams and remote teams. We just need to consider these for remote teams more. As they can be neglected easily.

Being a leader in any environment should mean constantly working to improve your process. Accessibility and communication are a must especially when working remotely. I work with a team of about 140 spread throughout over about 20 states. The Leadership team is constantly involved and communicating changes, goals, and expectations on a regular basis. They are have scheduled individual, small team, and large group meetings. I have people on my team I have never met in person but I know through experience that they are only a call, text, or email away when dealing with a difficult situation. Leadership is not just about today, it is about keeping an eye to tomorrow and that is even more prevalent in our post-covid remote world.

As a project manager, it's essential to engage yourself in continuous reflection and improvement when overseeing remote teams. Furthermore, it's imperative to actively seek feedback from team members, peers, and superiors, valuing their perspectives and suggestions. By consistently reflecting and improving, you can substantially bolster your confidence, competence, and credibility as an effective manager of remote teams.

Your team needs to feel comfortable approaching you with any concerns or needs. Your virtual presence should make you easily accessible via text, Teams or other format. If a team member starts to flounder, you have to be willing to take on some onus; what have you not done sufficiently to support them in their role? Continually reflect on how you ensure that they have everything they need to be successful. Informally check in and touch base often. Do professional development often to hone your skills as a leader. Be open to staff members evaluating you and offering feedback.

Resolve team concerns on time: It is very important to create an atmosphere where the team members doesn’t shy away from sharing their concerns. As a manager, it’s essential to address those concerns on time and effectively. Several concerns like internet issues, hardware problems, communication gaps, skill gaps, etc. needs to be resolved in a timely manner. This will enhance the team productivity and their morale. Reduce administrative tasks burden on managers: Most often managers are forced to work on administrative tasks. These tasks are important, but needs to be delegated or automated. This will help them to focus and prioritise people management.

In my experience there is no alternate for meeting someone in person. Now what to do in this fast paced and connected world where remote work is common now. The most important thing is to have one on one video call to discuss non work related things. To understand what the other person is, what his/her challenges are, his family and whatever he/she wants to talk about. This really helps in building the trust and relationship required for collaborative work. It does wonders for the project and team overall. Also if possible, plan one physical meeting. Even one meeting per year will help you understand each other, break the ice and improve coordination and communication significantly.

Treating everyone with kindness and professionalism is key. I encourage staff to take breaks during the day away from the computer including going to the gym, run errands, etc. without needing to take it off their time. I make sure team meetings fit everyone’s preferred schedule and time zone differences whenever possible. I ask for their input when hiring full-time staff and invite them to be a part of the interview process, providing their professional feedback on candidates. I offer them opportunities to explore bigger roles within the company that may interest them. I do what I say Im going to do. I honor their time and commitments. I work alongside them as needed.
