- As most consulting engagements are project based, it’s imperative to correctly frame how to communicate. This can be from the standpoint of being able to accurately state why a project is delayed e.g, Sprint couldn’t be completed on time hence impacting timeline/cost/budget.

The key to communications is to connect with the other party by letting them know what they say matters. Interviews are an essential source for most consulting assignments. Interviews should be structured (use interview guide). Skilled interviewers not only use various techniques to connect but also rely on feedback while trying different approaches. For example, repeat in your own words what you heard the person say to make sure you interpreted it correctly. Active listening involves reading body language and determining when and how connections are being made or not. Avoid rabbit holes by staying on message but make sure the other person remains comfortable. Follow up on items where indicated. Stay attentive through interaction.

With over 15 yrs of consulting exp with a wide no of clients, I can vouch for one single trait that clearly distinguishes you as an able consultant i.e. humility. A humble approach to the whole process starting from getting the client on roll to giving the sol's at every level of your interaction will lead the client to open up as much as possible with their pain points . This will make sure you listen to the client & and empathize finally leading to solutions. It looks very simple from the outset but it's the most difficult aspect of the whole cons. process I am reiterating this with my exp and the success we have seen over the last 15 yrs & our biz has gone into auto mode thanks to our clients taking the role of our brand ambassadors.

It's seldom clear what the implications are from analyzing data in isolation. Therefore, I prefer to present findings to clients in a learning session format. They know the reality on the ground much better than I do and can share their organizational practices as we review what the data suggests. We can then formulate hypotheses and pilot changes which we then test in further data collection and analysis efforts.

- To cite McKinsey’s framework as an example, when performing data analysis you must be structured enough to follow the “MECE” principle I.e Mutually Exclusive & Collectively Exhaustive. - It’s easy to go down a rabbit hole when analyzing data but if you can’t take a step back and form a hypothesis about the data you’re analyzing, and accordingly bucket data into categories you’ll only end up confusing your client.

Active listening is a skill that we all could benefit from, but we often just try to gather the information that we need and move on. When you have a conversation with someone, carefully repeat what you are hearing them say to you, and encourage them to talk more. When someone knows that you are listening, they will open the floodgates.

Cultivating long term, trusted relationships with clients provides fertile ground for learning and growing both professionally and personally. Carefully curating the client list may be necessary to achieve fewer, mutually beneficial relationships.

Project Management in itself is a highly relevant part of any client engagement. In addition to what has been described here, I would emphasise on: A)Scope management: Define project scope with client to avoid any scope creep B)Risk management : Identify potential risks, create mitigation strategies to minimise disruptions to the project C)Data driven decisioning : Analyse data related to project performance so that it is easier to track progress, assess outcomes, and adjust strategies, if required. Also makes KPIs and metrics measurable.

In some of my early experiences with large construction projects, I was exposed to the then-developing world of project management systems and software. Project controls and schedules are important, but it is vital to keep clear on the distinction between project administration, project management, and project leadership. These three domains overlap and support each other, but they are not the same. Remember that the goals of a project, the stakeholders, the resources, the constraints, and the timing are not always clearly defined at the outset, but must be understood for every project.

Learning is what keeps me interested in consulting. In addition to learning about my clients, I am fascinated by neuroscience and what we are learning about how our brains function. A good summary provided above. I do see a gap on engagements that do not provide value. Despite the customer needs and the skill set you bring to the table, there are times is is just not a match. I have seen two material reasons. One is always the interpersonal relationship with decision makers, at times you just cannot find the connection to trust and interaction. Second, the skills and experience you are bringing to the client does not match the structure and culture currently in place. In either or any case, once you are not generating value to the customer the learned ability to withdraw from the engagement with respect to both parties is more important than any fee you can generate.

Type of consulting engagement is important as well, and should be dictated by client need. Project consulting, outsourcing/staff augmentation, advisement on call, and team/functional development are several different types of engagement that serve different purposes. It makes sense to consider the need when conceptualizing an engagement, rather than leading with one particular approach regardless of the need.
