Not all companies will utilize React so likely in tech interviews, you will be tested in what you know about JavaScript.

Everyone learns differently. Some need an in-person class in order to stay engaged, some prefer online videos, and others prefer reading the docs first for their language of choice. For me, I learned best with online tutorials. Learn a concept (for loop, map function) and immedaitely apply it with an online compiler.
When you first start off, you’ll probably find yourself typing or copying and pasting code from a tutorial. Try to make sure you understand what the code does (the semantics) as well as the code itself (the syntax). What helped me when I was first starting, was to adapt the code in front of me to do something slightly different. If I was starting out again I would likely use AI to break down what a piece of code is doing, understand the concepts, with the added benefit of then being able to understand how best I could adapt the code to do something else. AI is great, but try not to fall into the trap of letting it do all the heavy lifting to write your code - at least until you’re confident you could write it on your own!

Being able to show that you can apply your tech skills in a team setting is very valuable to showcase to employers.
In my experience, as you build your portfolio of projects, make sure you include an accounting of the results or potential results of your software. By sharing with your interviewer either the results generated or what impact could potentially be generated from your efforts you are showing the interviewer you poses one of the most sought after hiring characteristics. Having a bottom line results focused mind set, as a software professional, is one of those key success traits which every hiring manager is looking for in a new recruit.

Build a portfolio project around something that solves a real-world problem. This could solve a problem for you, your community or a business need. Not only will you be able to convey passion when talking about your project to recruiters and hiring managers, but it will help you to stand out amongst the generic To-Do and Tic-Tac-Toe apps.
Build your knowledge not portfolios. Join and contribute to opens source projects that interest you. Fix bugs, create upgrades or enhance existing features or develop valuable additions that enhance the overall functionality of the project. Demonstrate that you can effectively work on teams intimately by collaborating with others and communicating in the versioning/ticketing systems. By doing this you will simultaneously build your "portfolio" and critical collaborative skills. You will be able to join most teams right away with a firm understanding & experience with the equally critical non-technical skills that are the biggest bottlenecks when onboarding on teams. When you connect with other developers on LinkedIn, make sure you also add a custom message to show why you’re interested in connecting and what similarities you have with the person. Don’t use generic copy and paste messages because people can tell. For example the other day, I received 2 separate requests from people who had the same message in the same style: “Your profile is interesting. I am trying to expand my network in the tech industry.” It sounds like what you get from ChatGPT. Are you really being genuine?
When attending networking events (either in-person or online), take a note of the speakers names and jot down some key points on a topic they shared that resonated with you or offered a unique perspective. After the event, connect with them on LinkedIn and send a personalised message sharing your appreciation for specific aspects of their talk that inspired you, provided a new perspective, or offered valuable tips. This builds a much more meaningful and personal connection than sending a random generic request to someone.
Building software and system is hard but navigating and engaging with human is harder. Understanding the social aspects of your relationships is most critical. You can be the most knowledgeable and proficient programmer but if you can't effectively interact with humans you will not reach your full potential in this field. You will most likely engage and spend more time with your team and co-workers on a daily basis than your loved ones and having the social skills to deal with the various personality you may encounter will be critical to your success and longevity and more importantly your confidence in your engagements with others.
The final step is to apply for the jobs that match your skills, interests, and goals. You should prepare a resume, a cover letter, and a portfolio that highlight your accomplishments, projects, and value as a software developer. It's also important to research the company, the role, and the expectations before applying. The number one thing before diving into a career change or breaking into tech is to assess your financial situation since landing the first tech job typically could take a year or longer. Questions to ask: How much savings do I have? Can it last a year or more? What’s my backup plan if I start running out of money? Can I work full time or part time while trying to break into tech?
