From my point of view, it is very important to understand how well the ATS can be customised. Are we talking about a solution that is offered in this form to many other customers and can only be customised by the provider? This often means that providers will not make desired changes without further ado, as they assume that this is a very specific customer request. Only when a critical mass of customers who also have this request has been reached the provider will deal with the request. If you therefore have very specific recruiting processes in your company, in which other stakeholders may also be involved, it makes sense to analyse your own processes in advance and compare them with what a possible new ATS can support.

From my experience, the most useful features of an ATS are related to the fast screening of the applicants using keywords for specific skills of the role. Also, very important is to be able to easily search in the database of all applicants using advanced criteria, and be able to review fast the results selecting the relevant ones.

I like to start out by setting up my searches super specific to the role. Highly targeted, like a sniper. If I'm able to cover my role, great, these candidates are as much of a match as I can get. If I can't identify someone, then I'll slowly broaden my search.

This is key! The workflows will help set up a best in class candidate experience. There are times it's missed due to the transactional nature of setting up the ATS - ie open a req, post a req, process applicants. I'd recommend having a workflow identified prior to implementation to ensure all the features are turned on. One I love and highly recommend is the automatic response to candidates applications AND setting up qualification questions for an applicant to be moved forward or dispositioned.
