Expand your skillset. Nowadays SEM isn't just about managing the accounts in-platform. One opportunity for growth is to start learning about outside factors affecting SEM success, like product page optimization, CRO, UX, etc. if you're able to identify a good landing page from a bad one, AND if you can guide the client on how to improve it, you'll not only see more success in your SEM campaigns, but also add a skill that many SEM specialists lack, thus becoming a more valuable asset to your team!

In SEM, branching out beyond Google and Bing Ads was a game-changer. I explored Facebook Ads, LinkedIn Ads, and YouTube Ads to reach new audiences. Mastering tools like Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager, and Google Data Studio, along with SEMrush and Moz, enhanced my campaign optimization and performance measurement. This expansion of skills made me a more versatile and adaptable SEM professional.

As you expand your Google Ads knowledge, one thing you'll come back to time and time again are the fundamentals. How do you write a great ad? How do you audit the conversion tracking in an account? How do you make adjustments to bids and budgets? What bid strategy should I use for brand search? To master the fundamentals, write down 10 things you can and should check every day / week in an account. Make sure you follow that list until it becomes second nature. Search term reports, negative keyword routing, audience performance, URLs checker, etc. True mastery is not only knowing about each of the topic but also being able to explain that topic simply. Always dedicate a day to researching upcoming technologies that May disrupt the way your platform handles data and technologies that claim to speed up workflow. If you are ever behind in emerging technologies and If you stay ignorant to emerging tech You might as well find another job. Look at quarterly earnings reports of the platforms that you invest in and see what technologies they are looking at and are interested in because it is most likely that those tech companies will invest in solutions that impact their bottom line. If you can't accurately track your efforts you might as well quit SEM and become a sales rep for a credit company

If you get the fundamentals right, your campaign performance should follow suit. Don't ever forget to continue educating yourself, reading blogs and keeping up with the gurus across Linkedin. These ad platforms change so quickly and have regular updates so being lax could put you behind.

My biggest tip: Don't follow best practices as they're generally unrealistic for most small businesses due to the budgets or conversions needed to run campaigns efficiently. The best way I've developed my skills is through testing idea's I've come up with which are not so much "best practice" and the amount of times I've had insane results. Obviously, on some occasions you're going to fail but this is why as marketing experts we get hired in the first place. To test, optimise and tweak accordingly. Not just to listening to the "platform" sales reps...

What are your thoughts on making sure to explore and learn about developer / programming technologies due to the requirement of utilizing first party data? The move to 1P data requires you to update your tracking, invest in server side setups, and connecting to APIs in order to target users (see privacy sandbox website by Google). I've been doing SEM for over 10 years and work at an agency that has no developers on staff so I have to take up the role of implementing a solution. The dev documentation is great but I imagine there are others who are in this situation, and not being able to implement this update can make or break their business.

Two things. One ask what are we trying to achieve and who are we trying to achieve it for? This keeps the focus on the objective which not only includes sales or leads but also the key action we want them to do e.g. solve a problem with our solution, get them to consider alternatives. The who we are trying to achieve it for is one of the most underutilised questions and steps many SEM experts miss. The who gives you persona detail like: - How can we help them win their day? - What are the real internal and external problems they are trying to achieve? - What needs to be true for them to make a decision? Interview the who if you can! The second thing is determine your variable expenses. Only this will give you a "good" target ROAS.

Don't be scared to ask questions, especially when you're trying to learn and master the platform. One thing I always would preach when new employee's started and I was training them was... No question is too silly, but before you come to me have a possible solution ready no matter if its wrong or right. See if you can find and work out the solution first then you can discuss the pros and cons of your solution when you talk to your manager / boss.

Become a Collaborative Powerhouse: 1) Build strong relationships with colleagues across departments, especially sales, marketing, and content teams. 2) Foster open communication, share data insights, and actively seek feedback. 3) Be a mentor and resource for team members, readily sharing your knowledge and expertise.

Don't be a lone wolf. Devour industry blogs, attend webinars, and connect with SEM gurus. The more you learn, the more you'll grow, and the more valuable you'll become.

My biggest tip is just to work hard and share all the wins with your managers and boss. They love to hear what you're doing to crush KPI's for your client. You should be proud of your wins so don't be afraid to showcase them.
