How can you become a better servant leader as a Scrum Master?

Listen first, talk second. Understand what your team needs before driving your own agenda. Empower your team to self-organize and make decisions. Guide lightly rather than controlling. Facilitate meetings and remove roadblocks. Enable your team to focus on core work. Advocate for the team with stakeholders. Make sure they have what they need to succeed. Develop team members' skills through coaching and mentoring. Promote a collaborative, trusting environment. Be humble and willing to adapt your leadership style. There is no one-size-fits-all approach. Lead by example. Model the behaviors you want to see on the team. Eliminate waste. Celebrate the team's successes often. Recognize their contributions. These behaviors earn trust and respect.

A Scrum Master wears numerous hats, including that of a guide, coach, mentor, teacher, change agent, facilitator, advisor, and leader. To excel in this role, they must remain agile and adaptable, able to transition between these roles as the team's needs change in various moments.

To become a better servant leader as a Scrum Master, prioritize empathy, active listening, and fostering a collaborative team environment. Strive to understand and address the needs of each team member, facilitate open communication, and continuously seek opportunities for improvement. Lead by example, embrace a coaching mindset, and empower the team to self-organize. Regularly reflect on your own leadership approach, adapt to the team's evolving dynamics, and maintain a commitment to the Scrum values and principles.

The best way to become a servant leader is to create leaders within the team. Enable the team to make decisions on their own, promote collaboration, and coach them on understanding the scrum framework and events. A servant leader leads from behinds and lets the spotlight shine on their team :)

Servant leadership is always often mis-constructed as being a servant first to the team. Servant Leadership is about service mindset towards the team. Taking the team to the high performing level is the objective. Coaching the team to step out of the comfort zone however discomfort it may feel to some team members is a trait of a good servant leadership. Empathetic and active listening are all part of the Coaching skill that Scrum Master should imbibe.

Scrum Masters (ALL LEADERS) should be able to listen and empathize because it fosters stronger connections with their team members and promotes a more inclusive and supportive work environment. When leaders understand and relate to the experiences, challenges, and emotions of their team, it builds trust and enhances collaboration. Empathy allows leaders to make more informed and compassionate decisions, which, in turn, can lead to improved morale, productivity, and employee well-being.

One thing I found with being empathetic as a scrum master is to listen and watch out for team signals. A good scrum master hears with open ears, the great one listens and feels the signal.

Scrum master should listen and empathize. This helps in building trust in the team and creates a environment where team can open their feelings. Scrum master should be patent towards the team and should never try to impose things.

Empowering a team fosters a sense of ownership and accountability, motivating them to take initiative and drive their work forward. It also enables better team decision-making, which can lead to more innovative solutions and improved problem-solving. Empowerment increases overall job satisfaction, productivity, and collaboration, ultimately contributing to the successful delivery of high-quality products in an agile environment.

'Servant Leader' is outdated. It was replaced with "true leaders who serve". While the core responsibilities remained unchanged, Scrum Masters were historically viewed as caretakers. This led to teams not achieving the desired level of empowerment and resulted in burnout among Scrum Masters.
