Basic managerial skills is for all - learning, communication, goal-setting, problem solving, decision-making, and so on. These are "life" skills. Technical skills are "work-related". A healthy combination of life and work-related skills are necessary to do any job well. When recruiting college students, tests and interviews have to be so crafted and combined that they give the recruiter a fair "view" of the candidate's proficiency in life skills and work-related skills.

Keep it simple, sometimes we mistake qualities like Emotional Intelligence ,Empathy as soft skills..for being a good manager/leader you will need to to listen to you folks and help them,so while recruiting focus on qualities,communication skills can be taught and mastered over a period of time,we don't need just exceelnt power point presenters,we need peopl with technical and human skills, so while hiring check their technical skills and assess them for qualities like empathy or emotional intelligence,soft skills can be taught IMO..

I have had far too many conversations with hiring managers who expected someone coming out of school to be an expert at multiple things. Can they be taught? Are they passionate about something? I never assign candidates tasks without meeting them first at least in a short on-line introductory meeting. I think assigning them work without at least establishing some contact is borderline disrespectful.

One thing I’ve found helpful is always hire for soft skills first, because most technical skills are easier to teach once they are employed. It’s understood that you have minimum requirements with technical skills however the best hires for me have always been the ones who have well developed soft skills.
