In my experience aligning your goals is a crucial step to take upon managing projects with a budget. This ensure that the plans for future projects are clear and can be tackled as a team. Stakeholders, founders, collaborators, and staff scientists working cohesively creates a positive work environment and can allow for creative solutions when in tough situations.

I think these prompts are misleading: In the world of laboratory funding, long-term investments are often impossible. Especially in government, when you receive funds, both a deliverable and a timeline are assigned to it. Success lies in redefining long-term goals as short-term, achievable goals. Inventing a way to break up long-term goals into several shorter ones, that if the sponsor's priorities shift, can either still have made progress, or re-contextualized into their new priorities.

Define objectives and assess resources, and identify gaps or obstacles. Consider budget, equipment, personnel, time and data. Calculate project costs, benefits, cash flow ROI and impact. Assess the team’s skills and capabilities, and plan sharing and development.

Once the resource assessment is complete, prioritize projects considering urgency, importance and feasibility. Balance short-term and long-term goals, and avoid undue emphasis on both. Use tools such as objective metrics and matrices or decision trees for project ranking and trade-off analysis. Stay flexible by changing priorities as circumstances change.

With any project it is extremely important to get the inception right. Remember the 6 Ps - proper planning and preparation prevents poor performance! Research needs to be properly costed and funded - when we talk about trying to deliver research on tight budgets, this is because not enough thought and attention has been given to the true cost. I have learnt this the hard way. Under-costing funding applications to try to win competitive tenders is a very hazardous road - unless you are extremely confident that this is a loss-leader that will guarantee future income. Always think of hidden costs - university overheads may appear overinflated but the commissioner should be guaranteed all of the additionality engaging with a HEI should bring!

Where possible utilise other team members. If a team is working on a range of projects then each project may have peaks and troughs at different times, so get those in a trough to help others in a peak. Sharing team resources, if practical and possible, has a range of benefits including budget management.

The budget needs to be discussed again with higher authorities as poor finance will itself be a constraint for the project.Some goals could be delayed after prioritisation.
