How can you balance risk and reward in game mechanics?

In my design philosophy, balancing these elements is about crafting challenges that push players out of their comfort zones, offering rewards that are commensurate with the risks involved. This balance ensures that taking a risk feels thrilling and the potential rewards satisfyingly justify the challenge. It's a delicate equilibrium where the player's effort and skill are acknowledged and rewarded, fostering a sense of achievement and progress. When fine-tuning the risk-reward ratio, we are able to create a compelling gameplay loop that encourages experimentation, strategic thinking, and perseverance, driving the core engagement and long-term appeal of the game.

To balance risk and rewards in game mechanics, I define clear objectives with corresponding rewards, introduce gradual difficulty, provide immediate feedback, offer meaningful player choices, continuously playtest and iterate, and implement dynamic balancing mechanisms.

Risk refers to the possibility of losing something valuable, such as health, resources, time, or progress. Reward refers to the possibility of gaining something valuable, such as power, items, points, or achievements. Both risk and reward can be intrinsic or extrinsic, meaning they can be related to the game's goals and rules, or to the player's personal preferences and feelings.

The balance of your game depends mainly on your target market and the experience you want to create. Risk-reward situations should be carefully balanced to evoke the desired emotions in your audience. It's crucial to ensure that players have enough information to make "good" decisions. Lack of information is the most critical factor distinguishing a "hard" game situation from an "unfair" one. In hard situations, players understand why they're not succeeding (e.g., lacking the right item or character level), but in unfair situations, they're clueless about the reason for their failure. Always provide enough information for players to identify why they're failing and reward them accordingly based on the challenge's complexity.

Striking this balance properly can be extremely impactful on the player’s enjoyment of your game. You have to consider what possibilities your players are dreaming up in their heads when they look at the character, control-scheme, and mechanics you've handed them. Can you anticipate the kinds of fun and daring actions that players might want to try and do with the tools you've handed them? If you can anticipate what players might possibly want to do, then build out your game to reward players that make it happen. If they happen to reach an area they thought was out of bounds, you HAVE to be there already waiting for them with a big juicy reward to acknowledge the awesome thing they did. Instead of having perfectly balanced options, consider asymmetry. Provide different choices with varying risk-reward profiles to cater to diverse player styles.

Balancing risk and reward (r&r) is testament of skills of the dev team. Curation is the keyword here as r&r will define the experience of the player through various stages of the game. This means to understand the subtleties of the game you're working on and daring to confront the player with difficult decisions at the right times during the game's progression. Consider the following possible rewards: 1. player gets rewarded with more "game" 2. prestige, for completed difficult or long-term tasks Instead of focussing on the short-term implications of r&r, it makes more sense to understand the game as a whole first, before you apply generic "best practices" to squeeze out more playtime. A good game should be able to stand on its mechanics.

Having different risk and reward options encourages for varied playstyles. One player might bevreally experience and opt for a "glascannon" build, allowing him to exploit the game at the risk of failing hard if they dontplay well. A less experienced player may opt for a more balanced build allowing them to take more hits and still be safe, but not be able to break the game so easily. So with proper risk/reward options players can adapt the same exact game to their liking abd skill level, without designers needing to take into account all playstyles at the same time.

We can take a page from Von Neumann's Game Theory; and the importance of detecting and addressing minmax strategies. In this case, players are looking for the minimum risk to maximize their reward and once those strategies are found all other paths become unviable, is our responsibility to create as many tests scenarios as possible and find these strategies on our development environments. Even if our games are not a sum zero game or the reward outcome has no economic or monetary value, we as humas are rigged to optimize and intrinsically we will try to find the point of equilibrium in our strategic thinking. My advice: use tools like #machinations or Excel to map out your balance and create user personas to mockup player's behavior.

Instead of targeting the average player, consider different types of players with unique preferences and playstyles. Design options that cater to their individual preferences and offer different levels of risk and reward. Instead of simply adjusting difficulty based on wins and losses, analyze player behavior and learning curves. Provide escalating risks as players master core mechanics and offer safety nets like checkpoints and tutorials for unfamiliar challenges. Choices with high risks and potential failures should have impactful consequences, not just setbacks. Provide clear feedback on what went wrong and offer alternative approaches with different risk-reward profiles.

Determining the optimal risk-reward balance isn't overly complex, but it does vary across games. The key to achieving the right equilibrium for our game lies in initiating with a baseline and refining it through playtesting.

What we traditionally do in games is design a difficulty in "dents de scie" (French), that gives an all-powerful feeling to a player then gradually confront him to challenging situations, then back to the all-powerful feeling.

Best examples for me are Player vs. Player experience. Take Ultima Online (if you are old like me) or Albion Online (If you are genz and missed Ultima Online). There are zones where you are dying and dropping what you wear. What are some basic scenarios? 1.Get a good gear, increase your killing chances, but if you die, you lose significant items and money. 2. Get a decent gear, keep a decent killing chance, rely on your gameplay skills, and if you die, it is OK. You survive. 3. Get a terrible gear and pray for a good hunting, go after a current fight, killing chance very low yet if you die, you dont lose nothing. You can get hundreds of scenarios like these, and this is a RISK - REWARD at its best.

One clear example comes from Mario. The moment you are about to hit a Goomba, close to them, is the point of most risk. But at the same time it's at that moment jumping over them that you can kill them. So the risk/reward balances out, and the riskiest moves becomes the more powerful. At the same times this allows for a liw risk powerup like the fire flower or the star to feel so awesome, as it allows you to get the reward without the risk.

One of the clearest examples of Risk and Reward is the parry mechanics in several games, especially in the Souls-like genre. Let us take a direct example from Elden Ring: instead of simply blocking an attack (which is safer, but doesn't necessarily give you an advantage), you can try to parry it with a shield (which requires pressing the button at the correct timing). Miss the timing and you will receive damage (Risk) or nail it and break the opponent's defense, allowing you to deal critical damage to them (Reward).

A good example for me would be civilization which is also my favorite strategy game. A single well strategized move would either make you lose a unit or come out victorious in the battle. Also the risks of starting a war with other players to gain access to more lands and resources. You would be in bad terms with that kingdom but if successful you would have gained more resources for your cities to flourish.

In a story-driven adventure game, getting emotionally invested in the characters and making choices that affect their lives involves taking a risk. Players may have to sacrifice their character's happiness for the greater good, resulting in a powerful reward in terms of the impact on the story. In social online games, completing difficult tasks or achieving high ranks can enhance a player's reputation. This reputation brings intangible rewards such as respect, admiration, and even influence within the community. It adds a social aspect to the risk-reward dynamics, motivating players to push their limits in order to gain recognition and establish their standing among their peers.

The most important advice on balancing a game (especially one that has the difficulty of balancing risk reward systems) is to just start somewhere. Finding the perfect balance is something that will never happen the first try, and you can easily get yourself stuck on trying to optimize a system you haven't even tested yet. There are many ways to test a balance; simulating it through code/your game itself, playtesting it both yourself and though external players... There is no one right way to do this, and the best is to balance several options of validating. However, in the end it is the player that has to enjoy your game, not you, and not a statistical graph. Allways make sure to keep the enjoyment of actual players in mind when balancing

It is something that has to be thought about in detail. Take into account not only the prize, but the level of risk and the moment in which it is achieved during the general development of the game, and if it may be necessary balance it. It′s advisable to have a broad perspective.

One thing I've found to be frequently overlooked when considering risk/reward, and by extension mastery of a game or system, is time. The expectation of the number of attempts to complete an objective or master an aspect of the game can be just as important. How often are you providing the player with the intended experience? How many attempts until the player is successful? How long until the player experiences a similar success? The answers will vary for different players, but the reward balance should be done with intention and pacing in mind.

Risk and Reward it's one of the main factors in making games fun. Dark Souls is a clear example of this: Do you continue exploring and get a potential shortcut and treasure but risk losing all your souls or do you take it safe and backtrack? Will you try going for the kill on that final sliver of health on the boss but risk dying or do you wait patiently to assess your options? This kind of choices make a game like Dark Souls incredibly fun.
