If you are a closely held business, passion and purpose are responsible considerations. However, if you have investors, then your obligation is to first focus on profit and return on their investment. If the stars align and you can do all three, that is great. But, return on investment equates to sustainability for the business and for its employees. That is an important purpose for any enterprise.

Before launching my own startup, the main thing on my mind was how to help as many people as possible, and enjoy doing it, but have a clear way to monetize it. So the bigger picture is always about others first, and revenue is 2nd in order of priority. In my specific case, I believe we can make the world a better place by connecting as many people as possible by making business introductions. So my vision is to connect a million people around the world, building a platform to help other people become super connectors themselves. And that's exactly what I've done!

I often meet people who don't know what their life's vision and purpose are. They live their lives day by day, like water, just flowing along. In the end, they're like a boat adrift at sea, never docking at a harbor. It's essential to have a simple vision that can be lived every day with joy, such as, for example, "I am a smart person who generously shares knowledge." My life's purpose is to share the knowledge I have with as many people as possible, so that many people become smarter." When you have a simple vision and purpose, all activities and work revolve around how to make yourself smarter and motivate yourself to share knowledge with many people. And everything is done with full awareness and joy.

Your vision must transcend mere passion and purpose; it should embody an imaginative yet actionable glimpse into the future. Without this balance, you risk being trapped in the present, hindering the creation of value in the short and long term. Crafting a vision demands a strategic, systemic understanding of your context, allowing you to project potential pathways towards your desired outcomes. Vision and purpose are not the same thing. Your vision is where you want to get to, but your reason for doing so- your “WHY” is what fuels your passion to keep going when times are tough. In essence you need all three- purpose for what you are doing which drives passion in your business, a vision for the goal you are building toward and profitability to help sustain you toward that goal.

The questions one needs to ask are: How can the sweet spot where my passion and purpose overlap, solve a problem faced by humanity? How does this (solution) align with my vision? Which group of people have the most need/want for the solution that you offer? What are the deepest desires of this group of people, with respect the problem you are solving? How can I speak in a language that resonates with this group of people?

Implement a robust strategy that adapts to changing market dynamics, leveraging this knowledge to innovate and meet evolving demands effectively. Continuously analyze and gather feedback to refine your approach and maintain relevance within the market.

Before you dive into any venture, it’s vital to identify and understand your market. Start by researching your potential audience’s needs and preferences. Gauge how your offerings can address their problems more effectively than others in the competition. Ensure to validate your business idea through testing and gathering feedback from prospective customers. This process will not only help in crafting a product or service that truly resonates with the audience but will also assist in carving a unique niche in the market, paving the way for success.

Profit is like oxygen. Without it… things don’t last very long. You’ll have payroll, vendors, taxes and so many other expenses that come due in good times and bad. If you’re serious about your vision then you need to make sure you’re on top of your finances. This is a great place for your board, advisors and team to play a role. If you’re going to run a loss, it should be making deliberate investments that are appropriate to the maturity of your market. In many cases poor finances are just a result of lack of attention (don’t have a handle on the finances) or lack of focus (trying to do too many things at once) on the part of the founder.

Financial forecasts are great to help map out what the financial future will look like. And there are many ways to do this. Most people skimp on their bookkeeping and accounting though. You need this to be rock solid or: -how will you know if you hit those forecast targets? -how will you know how your costs or revenues are tracking? -how will you know how profitable you are? -how will you know where you should make different financial decisions? The foundation of your financial system is extremely important, but most people like to live well above it.

What if we manage our finances with a profit first approach instead of a revenue/expense approach? Lets say we need "X" amount of profit, budget our expenses and then deduce the kind of revenue that needs to be generated. The profit first model has better potential to turn a business profitable, faster.

The better you can manage your finances, the bigger your impact will be. To my eyes, there is no sustainable business without sustainable finance management.

Creating a team who is values-aligned builds more synergy for maximum impact on the mission & vision of the company. How to do that? Take a Forest & Trees approach to connect the dots. The "Forest" view is combined as a team when all can write out their personal mission statement (with 5 values, 5 actions, & 5 impact identifiers for each team member) & then share with everyone to build trust. My parents really instilled in me the notion that they day you stop learning is the day you die?— this is something I live by. There are two beliefs I stand strongly by. The first is to be humble enough to learn everything and anything, there's no such thing as knowledge "beneath" you. And the second is to constantly implement what you've learned, don't wait until you feel like enough of an expert.
