How can you balance the needs of parties in employee relations conflicts?

In the busy world of hotel operations, conflicts are bound to arise.But I did something incredible today!I found a way to maintain and resolve delicate situations between entry-level associates and their supervisors. ???? ?? By attentively listening to both parties, I can effectively address the issue and understand their perspectives. ??? Acknowledging the associate's concerns and creating a safe space for open communication reassures them that their feelings are valid. ???? Approaching the supervisor with trust and confidence fosters a supportive environment for growth and collaboration ???? Encouraging a constructive conversation between the associate and supervisor helps them find common ground and understand each other's challenges.

It is important that in any form of disagreement that you take the time to identify the true nature of the conflict. Why are they not in sync , why are they disagreeing , what historical interactions have led to this . And then to ask the questions . Is this conflict or is this disagreement of people styles. Offering mediation and conversations before we settle into HR Policy as a default .

Most important thing I found out was to get the parties first to be honest to each other on the issue of contention, lack of which, the root cause would never be identified. It is key to go through this stage first. Trusting that the process is fair, transparent will further increase chances of reducing potential conflicts within the employees hence easier to identify and mitigate on most of the drivers of these conflicts at the earliest stages.

The starting point is to have a clear policy or guidance on how the organisation deals with conflict so all employees are aware of how matters will be dealt with. I would recommend all managers are provided with training on managing conflict to equip them with skills and knowledge on resolving conflict. I would always recommend that any conflict that arises is dealt with quickly to avoid any unnecessary escalation. This also provides reassurance to all parties and promotes a culture of trust.

After conflict arises, you are forced to react - right from knee-jerk to fire- fighting. But essence lies in anticipating potential stage and as far as possible nipping it in the bud before it flares up . Root cause analysis, may help future prevention. Certainly great skills are required in dousing the fire- conflicts and ER professional must hone them.

Harmony and relationships are the goals of accommodating style. It's useful when the issue is not vital to you and you prioritize maintaining goodwill. Both parties' interests strengthen relationships. Sometimes, it's best to step back and let the issue resolve itself. This style can be useful when the conflict is trivial or when emotions are running high. However, be cautious not to avoid conflicts that require resolution. Assertiveness means directly addressing the issue. Having strong convictions and protecting your interests makes it effective. Being assertive doesn't mean being aggressive. Remember, conflicts are a natural part of any workplace. The way we handle them reflects our commitment to finding fair resolutions.

Conflict can arise from various sources like Resources Non- availablity, Difference of thoughts, Territory or border disputes, Power Struggles, Disagreements, Personality clashes or disputes within the workplaces. It's important to note that conflicts can vary in scale and intensity, from minor disagreements to large-scale wars, and their impacts can be short-term or long-lasting, affecting generations. Conflict resolution and prevention efforts aim to mitigate these negative consequences and promote peace and stability

I have worked for a large organization whose maturity was 4 on a 10- point scale. There was a huge misalignment between strategy, culture and human resources capability. Not least, conflict was largely furned by the Head of our organization who was grossly underqualified. Harassment was normalized and I experienced covert ideological resistance as a female senior manager by subordinates. I engaged the senior manager Risk Management to highlight the negative impact the toxic environment had on my mental health and productivity. HR subsequently implemented an OTL Grow coaching for purposes of, inter alia, coaching employees on a one-on-one basis. This system helped in resolving conflict during performance review sessions.

Find out if external factors such as stress , burn out or a hostile work environment is contributing to the conflict. Addressing the underlying issue will contribute to effective long term resolution of conflict. If a staff is dealing with a narcissistic leader or colleague, traditional conflict resolution will place the injured employee at a disadvantage

I was once in a heated meeting where different teams were squabbling over resource allocation. Instead of joining the fracas, I proposed a collaborative solution that drew on each team's strengths and mitigated weaknesses. With a dash of humor, I likened it to creating a "conflict stew" where we threw in all our ideas, seasoned them with compromise, and simmered it until we had a delectable solution. This not only diffused tension but also added a bit of levity to the room, making it easier for everyone to agree on the best course of action.

Have the bigger picture before starting the process. Having the true context and dealing with the true facts will prevent the mediator complicating the matter further

I also suggest using clear and concise language, maintaining a neutral tone, and handling conflicts with empathy and respect.

Having spoken to each party separately beforehand and then sharing some of my independent views to the other side before they come together has helped to provide a different perspective to each party about the others intentions. You must built trust with each party around your independence in this situation to achieve this. It can make the communication flow better, with greater respect shown

My Two colleagues, let's call them Jane and John, were at loggerheads over project responsibilities. Jane felt John was taking credit for her ideas, while John thought Jane was undermining his authority. To balance their needs effectively, I had to tap into my communication ninja skills. First, I organized a meeting, I encouraged them to express their concerns, – there were lots of fizzing emotions. So, I employed active listening by paraphrasing their points and summarizing the core issues. To keep things light, I threw in some humor when appropriate. I said, "You two are like peanut butter and jelly, great separately but fantastic together. Let's find a way to make that happen!" They laughed, which helped ease the tension.

Be clear , be precise and ensure that you understand how each of them communicate . Adapt your style to ensure they are clear and feel that their voices are heard .Ensure that you allow time for different styles to communicate with ease and ensure that you also keep the process and people on track.

Do not ambush an employee with one sided information. Before the discussion explain the issues to discuss to allow each party to prepare. Deal only with facts and avoid side shows. This will allow the parties to feel safe

Come at it from different angles, if one way isn't working then stop and have another go. You can always wipe the slate clean or draw a line in the sand. It never hurts to put your hand up and tell them you're not getting anywhere and you want to try a different approach. Be mature and open to alternatives.

Consider the following : Mediation, Coaching , Mentoring , Communication workshops as alternatives. We manage the biggest assets of any working environment . It is our role to understand the complexities of how humans interact in a work environment . We Manage the culture and should at all times guide our teams through conflict by exploring alternatives that might include formal disciplinary procedures .

*Relationship, Process, and task - 3 major areas where conflict arises* When it comes to Negotiation, I've a handy 4 principles which Harvard has introduced to me. #1: Separate the person from the issue. # 2: negotiate not position focused but interest oriented. #3: Develop a criterion that a solution must fill. #4: You should develop multiple options. and take criteria. The below points will help you before applying the above principles, such as a. How the parties are connected? b. What's the Conflict's intensity and duration? c. How many non-relevant people are involved in this? d. Clarity on the emotional state of the direct parties who are involved.

But truth is, there are policies and procedures derived out of particular Acts, and therefore cannot be negotiated on. - lay aside quoting policies that make one person ‘more’ right and hinder the voice of the other, even if they are not accurate in their statements and perceptions. - never allow friendship to lead your leadership. If you do you will be amazed at what will come out of the darkness into the light. - always be prepared to invest in reconciliation. - always suggest services that may help in the conflict at hand for personal debriefing and the yeast in the batch to help the person rise again.

Transparency around next steps if the negotiations don't work is also critical - it holds each party accountable to make reasonable efforts to resolve the issues with the decisions reached

Aiming for an outcome you can live with is a more realistic goal than holding out to ‘win’. Pragmatism is the key to reaching a resolution. When people feel heard and respected, pragmatism is more readily achieved.

Communication is the key in conflict management. Facts and figures related to the situation shall be shared with all concerned parties with clarity and purpose. Confidentiality should also be ensured throughout the process, as any mismanagement of the information can lead to unwanted situations.

While addressing a conflict, as a project manager or team manager leading team of individuals, I have always found empathy and emotional intelligence to be of great help. Listening to the parties involved and understanding the nature of the conflict by eliminating unnecessary noise that comes with it, helps zero down on the actual cause or source of conflict. Then using analytical skills & critical thinking, I was able to deescalate the situation by means of effective communication & by persuasion. The conflict situations had been handled well with improved team collaboration. However, conflicts if not handled properly & in time, lead to impacts like reduced productivity, absenteeism, lack of enthusiasm, poor delivery & project failure.

As a leader you really have to work at constantly nurturing and empowering all your employees every day. “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care”. There are a lot of people saying that but in my experience that is undeniably the truth. Be fair but firm.
