I used to say to my Emerson College graduate students in my Digital Storytelling class..."If your 10-year-old nephew could shoot this story on his cellphone, and you know it would still be great...now you've got something!" The addition of talented filmmakers and great lighting and camera equipment will just make it better, not try to "cover-up" a bad idea with expensive production.

Renting is always a good option but more importantly identifying what the project's technical and creative requirements are. Different projects demand different looks and specs. More importantly than bringing the right gear, being a good filmmaker means being able to collaborate with others on the project to figure out how to best adapt to the circumstances of the project. However, we can't deny that there are a lot of projects that demand similar specs/gear and it's important to keep up with the tech so you know what to expect on set. Know the limitations of your gear, and plan accordingly. If you don't have a super expensive camera with crazy dynamic range, don't shoot indoors with windows in your frame, etc.

Start by learning- YouTube-ing how filmmakers and video professionals use even their most basic gear can go a long way in informing you how best to leverage yours in a given situation. (Strategically) simplify your creative concepts if budgets are restrictive. This allows you to focus more intently on the vision, the story or the brand image rather than technical nitty-gritty, and does not necessarily entail a reduction in quality. Rent and borrow before buying! Each producer's workflow and needs are different, so as your knowledge expands and your projects grow more complex, you will more easily pick out the equipment that best suits your specific needs.

Lorsque vous possédez une caméra ou un projecteur, vous ne l’utilisez que quelques jours par mois (dans le meilleur des cas). Base what you buy on a pretty easy equation. How often do you need to rent it, and how many times, before you're paying more for it than if you just bought it? So if you need a FX9 Camera twice a week, you'd likely pay for it in rental fees in half a year. But if you need a full ARRI Alexa set-up, but for 5 days a month, then that might not be worth a purchase. You also need to include the value of the time it takes to rent (rather than have it at your office/studio) and investing in equipment that might get you more work once you own in (like a macro lens or drone).

I always buy to reduce my long term costs. However, don't always chase for the newest tech unless necessary. Many of the equipment we have from many years ago are still very useable today. Instead improve your skill and technique rather than looking for new tech. This will help you save costs in the long run.

A great option is to speak with specialists in each role, so a freelance cinematographer for instance regarding the best cameras, pros and cons, etc. Renting for different shoots is of course a great way to ensure you know what works best.

First step will be to set your budget for the equipment. After that, it is important to go to at least 5 different equipment rentals and choose their best camera and microphones and any other required equipment within your budget. Once this step is done, you can compare all the prices and qualities of the equipment and make your decision. This way you get the best equipment for the least price possible without compromising on quality.

Don’t be afraid of used. B&H as well as many photo and video stores, Best Buy, and rental shops sell used inventory all the time. Most often it’s backed by some form of warranty and has been cleaned and inspected and you can save a decent amount of money. If you’re dead set on a camera system but need to afford lenses and media, don’t be afraid of embracing a used but well maintained body to then afford the lenses and media more easily.

You have to know what you are paying for. I bought a shameful number of microphones, just to discover that some of them are useless for my projects. So go and see what you are going to buy! Test them! Ask somebody who uses them for the same type of project you will do! You may not need the best quality available for your project. A YouTube podcast does not require the quality of a Netflix documentary. Nobody will notice the difference watching your podcast episode after it was compressed and streamed by YouTube!

You can get so much production quality for such a low price as long as you're planning accordingly. Know the limitations of the equipment you have access to and use them to your advantage. Lighting is always going to be your unsung hero when it comes to getting something that looks high quality, so if you know how to light a scene you can make even the most mediocre of cameras look amazing.

Hire the right people for the right jobs. Know their qualifications and review their work before hiring. Also review for collaborative personalities who want to make things work efficiently while under pressure.

Plan ahead so that you don't waste your resources. Make sure that you someone to help you out when you are filming, so that you can get more work done.

Things like SD cards and batteries aren’t the biggest outlay you’ll face but they can add up. Do you need a ton more batteries, or do you just need to remember to actually charge them as soon as you get back from a job?

We have adopted an Agile, continuous improvement workflow where we review our checklists after each shoot to identify any areas of improvement. We have a day-before checklist to ensure all equipment is ready, a day-of checklist to verify everything is prepared to roll to the shoot location, and a post-shoot checklist to ensure all critical assets are adequately backed up. In one of our post-shoot reviews, we determined that for a future project, we were required to provide an additional backup for the on-site location. We acquired another means of remote backup and added it to our workflow to ensure it met any future requirements from this client.

Personally I had to upgrade some of my equipment after many years of use and love. The tripod was broken in three different parts and the camera I used barely kept a charge and struggled with higher resolutions. I slowly replaced both and I can say my work has gotten so much easier. I did what I could to not break the bank but fortunately now a days it’s much easier to find affordable options. If you’re nervous to upgrade just set a price you’re comfortable with and research the options in that bracket. I always encourage to work with what you have but if it is impeding your work flow then consider upgrading.

This is a clear callback to my "date the body, marry the lens" mantra. Again, bodies are a dime a dozen (I wish..) but grip gear and lenses have real lasting power. I'm a quality over quantity person also. It's better to have a few pieces of high-quality equipment that you use regularly than a large collection of lower-quality gear that rarely gets used. Focus on investing in equipment that will directly impact the quality of your final product. Again, lenses just don't become instantly obsolete, especially if they are manual focus.

I'd say always get professional eequipment that's a bit older rather than a "beginner friendly camera". Because that gets you used to the system you're operating with. Of course you need to have working equipment but much more important than having the latest and best camera is that you have a voice, know what and who to shoot with and who you're building your team with.

If it's no longer meeting your needs or starts affecting your video quality, it might be time for an upgrade. Likewise, if repairs become too costly, replacing might be the smarter move. Always creating is the best way to learn. When you don’t have client work to shoot, come up with something that will sharpen your skills and allow you to try new things. It’s never wasted time as you can use the content for marketing yourself or your business.

If you lack a piece of gear but want to still get a shot you think that gear is vital for, challenge yourself to think about how to achieve the same result with what you currently own or have access to. Look at obstacles as opportunities to find creative solutions and you’ll find your shots and overall filmmaking improve over time.

Learn to express yourself in words, images and sound. Share your feelings, successes, and failures. Storytelling is infinite, without boundaries. Dream, experience life in the present. Watch films. Make videos. Shoot photos. Do these things everyday, after 10,000 hours of experience, you're bound to get better.

Avec humilité, on doit reconna?tre que dans un domaine qui touche a la création, l’apprentissage est quotidien, tout autant que l’utilisation de matériel dont l’évolution est très rapide. L’informatique a envahi tous les domaines en soumettant les utilisateurs à la valse des versions, standards, technologies… Alors évoluer dans un domaine ou création et technique se mélangent aussi intimement ne peut que conduire à la remise en cause permanente.

Always be talking with others who are more experienced than you. Find someone and debrief projects with them, if they have gear you don’t ask if you can borrow to better learn the workflow. Even ask if you could shadow on a production that is similar to one you have upcoming. Don’t be afraid to ask for help! It’s not a sign of weakness but of willingness to learn!

Video equipment costs are only a fraction of the equation for the delivery of quality productions. A majority of the budget should be allocated toward talented DP’s, AC’s, Sound Recordists, Media Managers, Electrical and Grip departments. I think a strategic aspect to gear is to plan and scout for additional filmmaking tools that improve the overall workflow and shooting experience and are compatible with different cameras so they don't turn obsolete when interchanging the camera. I'm thinking here in things like lighting equipment, video transmissions, good tripod and in general good grip gear and monitors.
