Before you look outside, you've got to look inside. Before you can go to the market offering your talent, you must first have a clear and solid grasp of what you want from the market. What do you want and what do you have to offer in exchange? Most people go to job boards trying to fit in. Not you. Go as a researcher. See what's out there. What matches with what YOU want? What problems do YOU want to solve? Who is working on cool projects where YOU'd love to get involved? What skills do YOU enjoy using? This is the place to start - then you can start using data to conduct external research about what's happening in the marketplace.

We should always seek to data informed, never driven. Data can be made to say almost anything, given the right context and presentation. Good data communication relies on context. This means that we should take data onboard, but not be bound to it as if it is some absolute truth. Instead, we should see data as one pillar of a 3 pillar approach. Another is professional experience, what have you seen and heard? What have you done that has worked in the past? These experiences have value and should be considered. We must also research the current context in which are are acting. This third pillar requires us to slow down and get to grips with the specifics of the given situation. We can then apply this context to our other 2 pillars.
