When looking at an personal expat posting regardless of the location there are a couple of things that individuals can do to make the transition a little easier such as 1. Do your research at the time of applying for the role, gain some insight into the local culture/s, 2. Some of the idiosyncrasies of the people, location, government etc 3. Learn as much as you can about the people, language and some of the differences between what the indigenous populations challenges are as opposed to the expatriate community 4. What’s the health care, schooling, Accommodations, urban and rural infrastructure like

I agree that preparation matters much more than most people think, particularly when it comes to understanding the local social challenges. My personal experience of moving to Barcelona is illustrative: one cannot understand this region without a minimum of historical background. And in the day-to-day, knowing about history will help be more subtle in discussions.

I would underline that language matters more than it seems : an old Scottish Consultancy firm partner once told me : English is very subtle, and while your English is very good, it will take you many years to understand the nuances. Here is an example; the words used to express an imperative order or a simple advice are the same, context only will tell you if you were just told off or if you just received a friendly advice!"
