How can you balance affordability and profitability when pricing photography services for small businesses?

Factoring in time, travel, props, editing, and printing costs is very important. One thing I do instead of printing is out the images on a USB so the cost is lower than printing.

Don’t worry about bowing to what you think businesses are willing to pay for your services because it’s probably more than you think. Regardless of your pricing, there will always be people both willing and unwilling to pay it. Once you have your total of ALL your related expenses and what you want to make, start your marketing push and note the kinds of businesses and people that hire you. After a few months, you’ll have an idea of who is willing to pay your rates and focus your marketing to those business avatars.

Part from the obvious expenses as mentioned here, most importantly, don't under estimate your work! If you don't value your work enough, nobody else will.

Researching your market is another important part of your pricing. I try to be in the medium range if my competition. My work speaks for itself and being in the middle makes my business more attractive.

This is a very sensitive and rough topic. With great cameras that are very affordable now as kits, the market is saturated with photographers. Even doing all the research, proper pricing and establishing a great network, nothing will ever beat FREE. And unfortunately, these new photographers are offering free services everywhere. So now you must research your market but your possible customers even more. You have to create photos that the "free" photographers cannot, the clients have to see it and instantly see/know the difference. Take the photos that justify your pricing.

Offering different packages is a really good idea as well. I offer different packages for my business but those packages can be changed to meet the clients needs. Being flexible is also a plus.

Definitely being flexible is a good thing. If you shoot on location you never know what the weather will do. Natural lighting could be different, your back drop could change due to many different situations. Patience is a must!

I run all those methods and it works perfectly. Just make sure your information is to date. I always offer free consultations over the phone or zoom/FaceTime. It helps put the clients at ease and it also helps in getting to know one another.

It's OK to have an initial proposal, and than adapt it to meet the budget by eliminating the stretch portion of the requirements. Clients will almost always pay for what they need, but only sometimes for what they want. Pricing can be multitiered, giving the client the power to control their spending.

There are a lot of photographers who are introverts, and if you want to contract portrait sessions with seniors, families, and school teams, being an introvert is not going to work. You have to be out going and energetic, the clients love it and if they are enjoying themselves and are comfortable with you they will come back for more and also recommend you to friends and families. That is what works for me, I have landed so many more contracts with school media day sessions because they all say that I make it fun for the kids and families. Try it and see, be more playful with the little ones, being music to the school sessions and have some fun with them, if they are making tiktoks, jump in with them!

Understand your culture and what is most affordable for the people that live in your area. Make sure it’s affordable for them but also, make sure it covers the time you spend if you do any editing. Make sure you have evidence and paper contracts, etc. for your clients in case they decide to back out on you. Be sure they are serious in having you do their photo shoots. It is probably wise to have them pay a certain amount up front or that they must pay once the photos are ready for them. It’s always best to place “Sample” across your work until the client pays you.
