A comprehensive tools and equipment management program goes a long way in preventing incidents in the workplace. Such a program should include: - an equipment and tools register with each item allocated a unique ID number for traceability, - training of all users to ensure correct and safe use, - pre-use and regular inspections to identify defects and ensure they are corrected before use and, - colour coding for easier identification of faulty equipment.

Apart from from right tool for right job, the focus should be the trading and awareness. And the integrity of the tool shouldn’t be compromised while working with the tools. In most of the cases the upkeep and maintenance of the tools are not done properly as per the their OEM requirements or standards.

Nobody carries around the instructions so it's up to the employer, supervisor or senior team members to ensure others are trained on the correct tool for the task as well as the tools limitations. If the clothes are small, then they hinder movement and at the most inopportune moment, you can't make an important movement. If the clothes are oversized, they also make your movements clumsy. As an artisan myself it is important to have respect for your tools. This means keeping them in excellent condition. Personally I would issue tools to people, make them responsible for their upkeep. Create ownership and even consider recognition schemes for those who look after them the best. For shared tools one must have a dedicated storage area such as a tool store and the most simple yet effective way to maintain them is with a shadow-board. This allows tools to have a dedicated place and one can quickly see when it's gone. There should be a method to sign tools out and back in and an inspection system to ensure it is returned in good condition for the next user. Ensure discipline is established.

Recognize changes in technology may create hazards. When talking about tool use, consider that most electric hand tools are now cordless. Training in subjects such as energy isolation or tool use should now include reference to removing batteries on cordless electric tools and the discharge of any remaining energy prior to tool adjustments, blade or disc changes.
