How can you avoid using technical language in your writing?

I always tell those writing to try to write it so that a grandparent can understand it and that starts with the very very first rule - Abandon Acronyms! Sounds pretty basic but if I got a cent for every email/report that I received with unexplained acronyms I'd be on a sunny beach today instead of -4!

When I begin interviewing someone I always start with this sentence: “Please explain this as if you were talking to your grandmother.” It’s a very good starting point!

Use non-technical language! Keep it simple. Don't use two words when one will do. Write for your audience. Use short, snappy sentences, not long-winded paragraphs.

One thing that I've found helpful is to imagine myself as my audience, and think about how I would like to receive the information. Content should flow like a story to hook people in, not sound like a lecture (because we all sleep through lectures or tune out the content if it sounds too dense). Once you get to a point where you're satisfied reading what you wrote and can clearly summarize it to someone else without needing to force any big words, then you've succeeded in building a relatable narrative.

Explain complicated matters as if you were speaking to your next door neighbor. Don’t assume prior knowledge. And stick with main ideas, don’t get stuck in the weeds of unnecessarily detailed background.

I've always used the prompt, "Explain this as you would explain it to your grandma, or a friend over a cup of coffee." I feel like this is a good way to get at a higher level and not so far into the weeds of what you are trying to explain. Leave that for the experts!

A good approach is to write for one person. Identify a colleague, or a friend who matches your target audience and then write as if you are explaining it to them. This will automatically simplify your language.

Keep it short, sweet and to the point! Write it once. Then revise and try to cut it by 1/4 while keeping your audience in mind. Then read it aloud keeping your target audience in mind…and don’t forget - AI can also be your best friend helping to revise and simplify your content (as long as it’s not confidential).

Aunque no siempre tendremos la posibilidad de apoyar nuestras explicaciones con otros formatos, hay ocasiones que disponer de una infografia, una foto o un vídeo pueden ser claves para hacer más comprensible un concepto o un texto. Igual que con un texto funciona la premisa que si es breve, es dos veces bueno, con las imágenes sucede lo mismo, especialmente si apoyamos nuestra explicación con un video.

A nadie le gusta que le muestren diapositivas o que le den documentos solo con texto plano. Aburre. Si quieres lograr atención con tu forma de comunicar, hazlo de manera que llame la atención e interese. Colores, formas, imágenes, gráficos, eso nos distrae de la monotonía de un texto y hace que la atención se active. Por supuesto, siempre teniendo en cuenta a quién va dirigida la comunicación.

Basic human interaction. We like colour, we like graphs, we like pictures. Look at any newspaper and remember ‘a picture tells a 1000 words’. Just ensure the picture relates to your message and is blatantly simple and obvious. If you’re writing for accounts, use visuals relevant to the accountant. If your writing for the media, use visuals that enhances and or tells your story. Simple basic concepts.

Write how you want to be told if you have no knowledge of the subject matter. Always write for the person who is less likely to understand the issue/topic. Write like the reader has only two minutes to understand and 30 seconds to be interested. Use visual aids, maps, graphics, tables.

Understand that negative feedback for a skill like writing is a gift. So often we are conditioned to take negative feedback personally but with writing, someone who shares that they do not understand your material - be it syntax, a description, or something that is overly complex - is providing the opportunity to not only improve one specific deliverable, but to improve one's ability to communicate overall. Take any and all negative or challenging feedback for writing, embrace it and if you really disagree with it - ask a second source for their opinion too.

Get timely feedback from your colleagues, they will give you the most objective assessments. From those assessments, carefully research and analyze the remaining issues in your article. Then proceed to edit again. Note that not all advice from others is the best choice, you need to research carefully and then make a reasonable editing decision.

??If I’m using technical language, I prefer getting my writing checked by someone who’s not familiar with the topic. If they understand the text, most readers will get the message as well.

It is very often that people forget this simple way of adapting your style. Just ask for feedback. but dont only ask use it!! Tweak according to what your audience needs and wants!

Pour éviter l'utilisation d'un langage technique, il est judicieux de faire réviser votre présentation ou messages par des personnes qui ne sont pas familières avec le domaine en question. Ces relecteurs peuvent apporter un regard extérieur et signaler tout jargon ou terminologie spécialisée qui pourrait rendre le message moins compréhensible pour un public plus large. En demandant des retours à des personnes non expertes dans le domaine, vous pouvez vous assurer que votre message est clair pour une audience diversifiée et qu'il atteint ses objectifs de communication de manière efficace. Vous pouvez aussi utiliser des outils plus adaptés qui peuvent reformuler vos propos et vous aider à simplifier vos textes

The message is what you need to determine from the beginning. That message must be strong, relevant and pervasive. This will be an important point to help your article be highly effective

Always, always start with a message pallet before framing your outline. Determine things such as your purpose, objective, audience, proposed objective and remember the recipient will always ask ‘what’s in it for me or how does this affect me etc.’

Don’t write!! Use a diagram, make an animation or video. The medium/format will not only make it easier but changes the way you explain. Reading is more cognitively demanding.

Man kann das Verst?ndnis testen, indem man den Text laut liest. Das klingt banal, aber es ist ein bew?hrter Trick aus der Radioarbeit. Importante definir a ideia que se deseja comunicar e o objetivo antes de desenvolver o texto, recomendo se perguntar se o objetivo foi atingido e se os pontos chaves foram comunicados com clareza após elabora??o do texto. Caso haja a possibilidade de bias/ vezes, recomendo perguntar a alguém algeio ao processo.

I like that this prompt points out "diverse audience." This is so important when you're communicating across cultures. The use of humor, historical references, and sports analogies, for example, may not be universally appreciated and understood across your readership.

Definitivamente el resultado de las palabras son importantes al momento de comunicar y trascender en un océano de ideas, a mi me ha resultado interesante encontrarme dando coherencia en expresar entre lo que siento, pienso y escribo, fomentando siempre ideas positivas en un lenguaje práctico pero decidor y muy claro.

Siempre hay margen de mejora. Para ello, debes buscar feedback de cómo se entendió cada mensaje masivo. De esta forma, lograrás conocer más sobre la forma de entender comunicaciones por parte de la plantilla, y será una lección aprendida para optimizar tu forma de comunicar. En caso de otro tipo de comunicaciones, al final consulta qué se entendió. Tal vez te dijeron que está todo ok, pero no comprendieron al 100% lo que quisiste comunicar. No des por sentado, corrobora.

J'ai pu participer à des formations sur les réseaux, lire des articles pour tenter de comprendre les algorithmes . Il ne faut pas hésiter à voir ce que font d'autres groupes même hors de sa branche afin de s'inspirer d'autres cercles de communication et monter en compétences

Write as you speak. Use easy to understand words. If you really need to use jargon, explain what it means or use an example or two. To the extent that you can, simplify. Make your writing accessible to non-technical people.

There’s nothing wrong with using technical language if if is appropriate for the format and audience, and sometimes you just need to provide a jargon explainer as part of your copywriting. When writing, I always consider “how do I want my audience to think and feel? What do I want my audience to do?” This helps me craft something technical into a storytelling or persuasive mode. Also, read it to yourself out loud. That’s a great way to catch unnecessary technical jargon!

As a final review, record, and read the piece out loud … then listen to the piece. Would anyone you stop on the sidewalk know all the words, understand the content, and find it interesting enough to share with a friend or loved one.

Tell people in the language they are used to listen to and speak to … and of course speak through your heart ?? as people recall not want you said but what they felt after they heard your words … I like this new vision: from mind-sets to heart-sets…

No hay una manera universal y efectiva de comunicar. Toda comunicación debe adaptarse al momento, entorno, contexto, y por supuesto a los destinatarios. Puedes lograr una manera estandarizada, pero verás que el formato será dinámico.
