Have a Plan B for when technology invariably fails you. A hardcopy of the basics of what you are teaching is essential to have on hand, just in case. This has saved me quite a few times over the years.

One top tip if you do a lot of online delivery, have multiple screens. One to show your presentation from, which has nothing else showing on it. And everything is running from another screen.

These are all great points! At the start of my presentations, I ask the audience what they expect to learn from the course and why the information is relevant. This allows me to tailor my comments to address these specific points. I find that my audience is more likely to share their insights.

Important to also engage students in the chat. Though online teaching can sometimes feel less interactive, the inclusion of chat has shown me that more introverted students are more willing to speak up. If chat engagement is done correctly—ideally with a dedicated person, like a TA—it can become a lively place of discussion, humor, and sense-making.

Think long and hard about your presentation style and the type of audience or student body you’re cultivating. Presenting online has a very different ‘vibe’ than in person discussions. You may need to approach the listeners to engage in techniques you wouldn’t implore in person. Don’t leave this to the moment, think and plan ahead!

It's so important that instructors are reflective in their practice. I always try to implement quick "exit tickets" on digital platforms to ask students how they felt about the instructions and if there are any topics/questions that they still may have. This shows students the importance of reflection and encourages them to vocalize their perspective in class.

Remember that people who are listening in have a harder time with the session than you as a trainer have. Depending on how long the session is, the moment it is over an hour I have at least one break. Even for just 5 mins to get drinks, toilet break and stretch the legs is beneficial. At the beginning of your session clearly outline when breaks will happen so your audience can adapt and plan.

This is the basic ask of any offline or online communication. However it becomes even more important in online forum if you really want the other person to take required interest. Make it as interactive as possible and preferably keep the video on. And if there are some presentation please ensure you take a pause after each slide and take any inputs. I have experienced it works best when you can set the context in the beginning itself and share some points then which can keep the excitement going throughout.

It is critical to have clear course goals/objectives alongside appropriate assessments to assess students' progress to course goals. Clear is kind; unclear is unkind. Be as clear as possible and anticipate questions from your students.

Bottom line: You got the information you needed. Go for it. You got this.
