In my experience, working with an expert in the field helps in defining the scope of the patent application with respect to prior art / published literature. Current software tools might provide unrelated or less useful information compared to the insights provided by an expert who is well versed in the topic. Also, an expert can help select relevant keywords that enables a proper search of prior art. Lastly , it is important to consult with the patent attorney early in the process to get advice regarding geographical coverage and legal status.

Perfect combination of keywords with operators, classification codes such as CPC/IPC, and use of filters (Priority country, publication country, Application date/year etc.) provided on Patent search engines yield better results. Though, no search is 100% perfect.

Attending a investors meeting of a robotic food preparation company, the topic of pipeline was discussed. The pipeline slide revealed a single beta test/ potential customer and two or three others that were competitors to the beta test customer. When asked why the pipeline was narrow in focus the reply was curt. "No, the pipeline is perfect" was the reply that raised red flags. The fact that this was not a topic open for consideration made it clear that issues were deeper than the shallow pipeline. The problem of accepting critical viewpoints left us all with the impression that agility, within the business model and within the mindset of the founder was difficult if not absent.
