1 Define clear goals

Discussing and defining clear goals also allows the person to hear/see/articulate the important components of their vision. Sometimes that can lead to change; sometimes what we think we want isn’t quite what we end up striving toward.

2 Establish trust and rapport

Another key element of effective coaching is trust and rapport. Trust and rapport are the foundation of a safe and supportive coaching environment, where you can share your challenges, feedback, and insights openly and honestly. Without trust and rapport, you may feel defensive, resistant, or reluctant to engage in the coaching. 3 Seek and accept feedback

One of the main benefits of coaching is getting feedback from an objective and experienced source. Feedback can help you identify your strengths, areas for improvement, and blind spots. However, feedback can also be challenging to receive and act on, especially if it is negative, unexpected, or conflicting. To avoid this, make sure you seek and accept feedback with an open and curious mind. Don't take feedback personally, but rather as an opportunity to learn and grow. Criticisms, even when constructive, can be hard to hear, accept, and integrate. The trust between the coach and client must be strong, and the delivery specialized to the client in ways that increase the likelihood of the balance between acceptance and understanding and feedback that assists the client to reach their goal(s).

Giving feedback as a gift is key. Be open to it yourself. Ask for feedback first as a good starting point. Maybe even ask, "What would you say to yourself, if you were coaching yourself?" Go from there. People will feel more empowered than just telling them.

4 Manage your time and energy

Coaching can be a demanding and rewarding process, but it also requires time and energy. You need to dedicate time and energy to prepare for your coaching sessions, reflect on your learning, and apply your new skills and behaviors. However, time and energy can be scarce resources, especially for busy leaders. To avoid this, make sure you manage your time and energy effectively. Prioritize your coaching sessions, set aside time for reflection and action, and balance your work and personal commitments. Coaching is not just the time allotted for the session - it is the thinking, processing, and organizing that happens in between. Setting aside time in addition to the scheduled coaching session will assist the client (and coach) in maximizing the efficacy of the coaching process.
