How can you be authentic when networking?

Knowing yourself = success. Authentic networking is simply an extension of your own self awareness. How well do you know your own preferences? Your assumptions? Your biases? Do you act day in and day out in accordance with your values? Before we connect with others, connect first with yourself. Be honest about your own limitations and spend time working on your insecurities. The rest will flow naturally.

I agree with the importance of defining your purpose before networking. Having a clear goal in mind helps you stay authentic and focused on meaningful connections. It's crucial to know why you're attending an event or meeting to ensure your interactions are purposeful. Additionally, knowing your purpose allows you to engage in conversations that resonate with your values and interests, making it easier to be authentic and genuine in your interactions. Without a clear purpose, networking can feel aimless and insincere. By setting a purpose, you also avoid wasting time on superficial interactions that don't align with your goals.

To be authentic means you know you are worthy of showing your authentic self. That's a tall order, especially for many women entrepreneurs who are often plagued with People Pleasing. But if you can boost your self-worth, this will translate into you being more comfortable showing your "real" self--being authentically you, warts and all. It also helps that you feel safe in the networking environment. Find a networking space where you don't feel judged, where the participants are kind and supporting, and where you feel loved and supported.

I see it differently. Approaching a networking event with a specific agenda often leads to disappointment. True networking is about forming connections and expanding your circle in a way that allows for mutual assistance. It's essentially about linking the right dots together. The landscape of networking has evolved, particularly since the onset of COVID, with a noticeable increase in sales-oriented participants.

whats really important behind the active and intentional listening is your body language. How many times have you been at a networking event and the person you are speaking with is looking over your shoulder to see who else is there? use you eye contact to be present -- look at them and nowhere else. don't cross your arms--that's a barrier and indicates your are not interested. Use you gestures as you would in any conversations. Nod your head to indicate listening. be alive in you facial expressions also don't be busy while listening thinking of what you are going to say next -- LISTEN. then follow up with questions or insights that bring clarity.

Listening is hard, just ask my wife. I took some improv classes which helped me in staying present and not thinking about what I was going to reply with, instead being able to actively listen to what the other person was saying. Ed Reggie Improv SHOUT OUT!

I remember having this conversation with one of the interns I worked with. She asked me how to stand out from the rest and achieve better results when building relationships. I told her, you would be surprised how many people don't follow up and follow through, doing it consistently is a form of showing trustworthiness and resiliency. This makes me think about using a CRM. The important things you need to make note of regarding clients or networking connections is stored in your CRM. You can set up automation or reminders to follow up not just 48 hours but 30-60-90 days.

After meeting someone you'd like to keep in touch with, follow up with a linkedin connection invite / thank you. Tie back to something you talked about that you found valuable. Share something you think they might find value in based on your conversation.

I went to a networking event last week, and this is what I did to be authentic - 1. I made sure that I'm APPROACHABLE. Before approaching anyone in the event, I made sure that I carry a vibe that I am easy to connect with for others. 2. Having a CLEAR purpose helps you filter out connections that you think will be more meaningful 3. Sharing personal experience always helps!

I was my authentic self when networking with a fellow Tour Manager while on the road 15 years ago, sharing stories, contacts and some laughs. I thought she was so cool because her tour was 5x bigger and better than mine. Fast forward, we toured together for a year experiencing this great country of ours... fast forward 13 years and we have a great life and two amazing kids. I'd say I'm pretty awesome at networking, at least in that one case.

Putting my focus towards getting to know people, understanding their needs and interests, as well as listening for ways I can support them allows me to foster authentic relationships. In other word, Im going there to see who can help me vs making a sale.
