1 Define strategic leadership

Before you can assess strategic leadership, you need to have a clear definition of what it means and what it entails. Strategic leadership is not just about having a vision or a plan, but also about executing it effectively and adapting to changing circumstances. It involves setting a clear direction and purpose for the organization and communicating it to all stakeholders, as well as aligning the organization's structure, culture, systems, and processes to support the strategy. Additionally, strategic leadership involves fostering a culture of innovation, learning, and collaboration among teams and individuals, developing and empowering leaders at all levels and across functions, anticipating and responding to opportunities and threats in the external environment, and evaluating and adjusting the strategy based on feedback and results.

2 Use a framework

To assess strategic leadership in a virtual environment, you need to use a framework that captures the essential elements of the skill and allows you to measure them objectively. The Strategic Leadership Competency Model (SLCM), developed by the Center for Creative Leadership, is one such framework that identifies four domains of strategic leadership: strategic thinking, strategic influence, strategic execution, and strategic agility. Strategic thinking involves analyzing complex situations, identifying key issues, and generating creative solutions. Strategic influence is the ability to persuade and motivate others to support and implement the strategy.
