3 Use assertive language

Assertive language is a way of expressing your opinion confidently and respectfully, without being aggressive or passive. Assertive language uses statements that start with "I" or "we", such as "I think", "I feel", or "we suggest". It also avoids words that imply uncertainty, doubt, or apology, such as "maybe", "sort of", or "sorry". Assertive language also includes facts, evidence, and examples to support your opinion, and invites feedback and discussion. For example, you could say: "I think this solution would be more efficient and cost-effective, based on these data and research. What do you think?"

Here are simple ways to be more assertive: 1. Focus on facts. When sharing your POV, tailor your points around what is factual or can be verified. 2. Speak clearly without question tags and disclaimers like: we are all trying to find a solution, aren't we? Or correct me if I am wrong...I think I may be wrong... 3. It's perfectly fine for two or more people to talk assertively during a meeting. It is not about who is right, but what is right for the group. 4. Being assertive is not about believing that only your way is the right way and others are fools. It is about- I see this situation a certain way. Let me understand other possible ways and then find the best possible solution.

However, letting your emotions get the best of you can harm your credibility, professionalism, and relationships. To manage your emotions during stakeholder meetings, try to stay calm, positive, and respectful. Avoid personal attacks, insults, or accusations. Use polite and constructive feedback, and acknowledge the emotions of others. If you feel overwhelmed, frustrated, or angry, take a break, breathe deeply, or ask for a time-out.

Utilize the power of the pause. Before you speak, take a moment to pause, breathe, and check your "Total Voice Control". That is Tone (how are you saying what you're saying), Volume (Are you raising your voice?), and Cadence (are you speaking quickly or slowly in a way that could be interpreted as angry or condescending?) Do not confuse emotional loss of control for "passion".

I believe, as long as you possess strong interpersonal skills and can read a room, you’d assert your opinion in a stakeholders meeting like you would in any other meeting. State what your opinion is and provide evidence to support your opinion.
