And while it can seem daunting at first, your hiring manager has been trained and prepared to engage with you when it comes your salary - it is quite universal in the training to become a people manager. Personally, I'd recommend a 1:1 with your direct manager a couple of weeks after a huge deliverable/win on your end. In an ideal scenario, it is not a one-time conversation and not at the time of the performance review. It should be more of how do I reach there and what do I need to do to reach there. This conversation should be held 9 months before the review cycle to give yourself and your manager enough time. And follow it up regularly. The expectations and the impact expected should be laid out. The person sitting in the driver's seat here is the team member expecting a promotion. Hence, courage and effort are 2 critical factors that will make this conversation successful.
