Safety training is pivotal for successful project. So you should always identify the areas with clear plans and objective then talk to potential mentor who will obviously help you out to execute it. Discuss your plan with open mind to get maximum outcomes and make the safer workplace.

There are 3 ways to get your work done in this case- 1. Build good communication skills- Communicate effectively with your mentor and develop good professional relations with him. 2. Fruitful discussion - While meeting with him, you must have a checklist what to discuss and how to ask for safety training. You must share your requirements and take proper time for the training. 3. Proper planning- Proper planning should be done including mentor selection, expertise sharing, number of participants, venue, time and proper training material.

Be someone worth mentoring. Mentoring someone puts the mentors reputation on the line. Be someone that shows initiative. Ask good questions. Go above and beyond in your willingness to get the job done. Find ways that you can help the mentor and offer it without expectations. For example, a lot of potential mentors may be older and not great with technology. If you are, help them get rid of any tech headaches they have. Asking someone cold to be a mentor is not the way to go. Develop some rapport, create a mutually beneficial relationship and the mentorship will develop naturally. Most of all make it easy for them. Remember, you likely need them more than they need you.

I usually consider the psychological part when approaching, that's why i recommend you to express the value of safety, acknowledge their expertise, highlight mutual benefits for a safer workplace, appeal to intrinsic motivations, use collaborative language, and align the request with organizational goals. Keep the message concise and respectful of their time.

When I’m approached about mentoring someone, I look at the intent of the person, the skills they have and what approach they take on the job or in the training environment. When I approach a potential mentor, I will ask if they have the time, the energy and hope that they will not think I’m trying to get to an objective faster. I think it’s a tough job to mentor. Sometimes it’s tougher being the one mentored and I have to look at the individual and hope that the knowledge is being processed to help further their knowledge base.

Be open to their availability. 7. Respect their time: Once you have a scheduled meeting, ensure that you come prepared with specific questions or topics. 8. Express gratitude.

Come prepared with questions and answers that you think will be useful for the meeting. When someone is looking for leadership they need to be prepared for the mentor to be looking for a base of knowledge before they commit to the time it takes. It’s tougher starting from scratch when you’re the mentor. Someone that comes prepared and has a path they want to take during this mentorship is more successful in the end.

El feedback es de las partes mas importantes por no decir la más importante. Siempre desde la base constructiva se debe comentar los puntos fuertes y debiles del emisor y receptor

Over the years have mentored many not in a formal mentor - mentee relationship. These mentees who have expressed in person as well as in meetings/forums that I have mentored them. Most of them have said it is the personal interactions during meetings/inspections/trainings and personal one on one exchanges. This has been very satisfying for me and I have seen many of them delivering their roles progressively going up the hierarchy in an excellent manner in diverse locations.

Mentoring is not about telling what to do and what not to. Rather it’s a calibration process for the mentor to understand the mentees approach and help navigate the process with some expert tips and headways. The expertise of mentor should not be pushed upon the young mentee as the only way of doing things. Remember there is almost a generation gap between the two if not more and that is a long time in today’s world for approaches to become redundant in the world of safety that primarily deals with human behaviour.

Know your current career level first.If you are an entry level Safety Professional you want a mentor with a broad spectrum of safety expertise as opposed to a niche area of expertise, unless you are seeking to grow in that particular area .If you are in mid-level you probably want a mentor who is a thought leader, and has additional skills like business acumen, budget skills, etc because your next role could be a managerial role and you shall require both safety and the additional skills.So, get a mentor a step or two higher than your current career level.If the gap is too big e.g entry level and thought leader subconsciously the mentee might feel intimidated and hence refrain from asking all their questions for fear of looking dumb.
