How can you approach a manager who is not providing adequate feedback?

In order to make sure your manager helps you with his objective feedback, you will have to keep him/her appraised of your key tasks or projects. You will also need to look for advice or expert input wherever you need it. This way your manager is well engaged with you during the planning/execution of your work and it becomes easy to provide constructive feedback. I know it is easier than said as your work may not be in top priority of your boss's list. But if you make it disciplined to steal a few minutes on a regular basis from his/her schedule, it will help set the tone and will be a permanent part of your working style.

one way of working around this situation is to go for "feedforward " discussion instead of awaiting feedback. Proactively engaging to know the thought process and questioning your assumptions at your daily work for its usefulness would anyway get some reply from your manager.Hence put your foot forward to get direct inputs instead of waiting for formal feedbacks . I suggest the daily updates or weekly updation reports shall carry some questions on your assumptions which needs the answer / direction from your manager .Hence take those as your . Proactive forecasting is the better way to align with this situation and asking for clarity on the solutions/ options proposed by you would anyway have some input from your manager.

In the usual daily routine,usually there is a pitfall for every mid senior level to prioritise and work on mainly his big boss' priorities. Hence scheduling a weekly one on one to report your findings on the project would enable your manager to set the platform to advise you . And if the project is of common / mutual interest, the feedbacks would come to you without any barriers. And during this time, you can seek feedbacks.The tip here is that the bosses are usually in need of information from the ground- which does not come as easily due to the boundaries and rigid leadership connect circle which they have developed. KISS: Keep it simple and specific: If the manager wasn't involved, ensure they understand the context and be specific about how I approached it. What were some things I did, what things I considered but chose not to do, what were my hesitations. Emphasize that I appreciate and value their advice. Then, be specific about what area you want feedback on. "Would you have done X the same? What is 1 thing you would do differently?" Do your Homework: Sometimes managers don't have all the answers. Do your own research and reflection first. "I thought I should do this better next time by doing ABC, what do you think?" "Can you think of 1 other person I can speak to about it?" "Do you know any resource I can use for X?"

Feedback is necessary, however one falls into the loop of constant validation in name of feedback. When working with CXOs of organization, no feedback shall be deemed good. Because wrong items from our work gets highlighted quickly than the good ones.

I acknowledge the challenge for those not working in a big corporation- where there is no such structure in place- no obligatory performance review (even if only once a year), and no incentive to talk about feedback, let alone your career ambitions. For some, managing people isn't something they like at all but is a necessary part of the business. If all attempts to engage with your manager has failed and left you discouraged, then look elsewhere. Not necessarily jump ship, but actively find other mentors for guidance, both inside and outside your workplace. There are plenty willing to share if you'd only just be willing to step out and ask.
