Nothing is static. Information is constantly in flux. Well-honed analytical skills will help you keep current by helping you intake new information, challenge established practices, and adapt to new situations - be they professional or personal ones. But along with developing keen analytical skills, you must also have an open mind. Analyzing available input requires critical thinking, but if your thought construct is frozen, if you are unable to expand your mindset; then the analysis is unable to foster any new ideas or understanding. If you ask three lawyers the same question, you may get seven answers. The same is true for many fields which rely on critical thinking. Intelligent minds can disagree, because analysis is not static.
Active learning strategies are an effective way to teach analytical skills in the classroom, as they engage students in problem-solving, inquiry, and exploration. Examples of such strategies include case studies, where students analyze real or fictional scenarios and propose solutions based on evidence and reasoning; simulations, which involve students participating in realistic situations that require them to apply their knowledge and skills; projects, which involve students working on complex and authentic tasks that involve research, analysis, and presentation of findings; and games, which challenge students to use logic, strategy, and creativity to win or achieve a goal.
The legal education field is built on this formula - the Socratic method. Professors challenge students to arrive at their own conclusions through critical thinking and analysis. Reaching the "right" answer is not as important as the process to do so. But law schools, like many educational institutions, also use experiential and active learning. This is important to help students learn in a somewhat protected environment so they feel empowered to stretch their mental wings and take in new experiences they might not otherwise learn. Another tried-and-true activity is competition, like debate or mock trial. Winning doesn't rely on physical triumph; it relies on the ability to engage, listen, think quickly, and adjust to new information.
In order to evaluate analytical skills in students, assessment methods that assess not only the final product but also the process and criteria should be used. Rubrics are a great way to set expectations and standards for each component of the analytical skill, such as data collection, data analysis, data interpretation, and data communication. Additionally, portfolios can be used to collect and display students' work and progress over time, as well as to have students reflect on their strengths and weaknesses, and their goals and strategies for developing their analytical skills. Self and peer assessments are also beneficial, as they motivate students to evaluate their own and others' work based on the criteria and standards, and to provide constructive feedback and suggestions for improvement.
Assessing analytical skills is only worthwhile if both sides of the assessment commit to and believe in the process. Too often, the assessee (the student) only gives what they believe the assessor (the teacher) wants to hear. Sometimes the assessor, especially if it is a peer, only provides nice feedback - which may stoke the ego but does nothing for improvement. If my public affairs professors or law professors had the same approach, learning would have been inadequate for the profession. Why? Because analytical skills rarely appear fully developed. They should be practiced, challenged, and honed for effectiveness. Students should self-assess. The professor should challenge that assessment and contribute meaningfully to effectuate change.
To effectively apply analytical skills to real-world problems in your field, you must take a systematic and logical approach that involves four steps. Firstly, you must define the problem by identifying and clarifying its context, scope, objectives, and criteria for evaluating solutions. Secondly, you must gather and analyze data from reliable sources such as books, journals, reports, surveys, and interviews, and organize, summarize, and visualize the data using tables, charts, graphs, and statistics. Thirdly, you must interpret the data, draw conclusions and recommendations, and communicate your results in a clear and persuasive manner using reports, presentations, and posters. Finally, you must implement and evaluate solutions, monitoring their outcomes and impacts, and reflecting on their strengths, weaknesses, implications, and limitations.
Working in the field of privacy and data protection, it seems my world is always changing via new laws, new interpretations, or new guidance. When such new laws appear, I must assess its applicability to my industry and specifically my company. Am I in the geographical region subject to the new law? If so, and practice X is now illegal, are we doing practice X? If we are, what would it take to stop practice X? I must consider the impact to my company beyond the legal impact; I must take a business approach. GAs a cost center, I have to consider the impact on the business directly and indirectly and develop a strategic plan to address the new law. In this, I have to know who my detractors and influences are and use them wisely.

Here are some ideas to help you do that: Reading widely and critically, from books, articles, and blogs, and evaluating the arguments, evidence, and assumptions of the authors; playing games and puzzles that stimulate your brain and test your logic, strategy, and creativity, such as chess, sudoku, and crossword; asking questions and seeking feedback from teachers, peers, and mentors to clarify your understanding, improve your performance, and gain different perspectives; and learning new skills and tools, like coding, data analysis, and data visualization, through online courses, tutorials, and podcasts from experts and practitioners.
Only the arrogant don't realize they can improve something, somewhere, somehow. Only the deliberately obtuse don't try. Self-awareness and development are the keys to success. Stagnate and the world doesn't stand still. It will continue to grow and move around you. Also, listen carefully and pay attention with an open mind and you can often identify your own areas to improve, because you bring those analytical thinking skills to bear on yourself.
In my experience, honing analytical skill is done by assessing the output of analytical skill. A strong "natural" is already putting into practice the six phases of data analysis i.e. analytical thinking: ask, prepare, process, analyze, share, act. An often-missing component is assessment. When an analytical thinker returns to the office and then home and doesn't have any sales to show for the day's effort—and eats what they kill as we say in sales—it's traumatic! 'No food' is feedback. They then reflect, research, and ask others what led to this situation, compile information, organize alternatives, analyze the whole landscape, share their plan with someone (team, boss, prospect, whoever), take action, then reassess. Rinse—wash—repeat.
