The presentation is really about story telling. From a sales pitch to a board room presentation it's knowing - what is the objective - how is it achieved which further ensues a. How clear is the objective to the audience In case of an fyi kind of presentation where audience is more of a listener .. the knitting of the slides is important. The brevity of the content is critical with focused one message on one slide. General business presentations it's good to target a 70:30 approach.. 30% of the content is fyi.. and not more. Remaining are actions, insights, engaging content. Otherwise it's a classroom lecture nobody is interested in.

One thing I have found particularly helpful is to weave the narrative of my presentation by highlighting key elements of a storyline that makes sense for my audience. Using jargon that allows all members and groups of my audience to understand the subject matter quickly is extremely useful. Being mindful of the attention span of your audience and the length of the presentation is very important to consider. Curating slide titles that convey the main finding, conclusion or result is an effective way to make presentations more audience friendly and impactful.

Yes know your audience, but know yourself and your subject matter better. In any case your audience is there to learn, and it's down to us to educate and fill the gaps. The presentation, design, audience etc.. are all architecture, whereas we the story teller are the architects - we must be prepared confident and knowledgeable enough to ensure our audiences feel they know us even better than we know them.

Keep in mind the "peak-end" rule. People tend to judge a presentation based on how they felt at the peak and at the end of said presentation. This may mean that you want them to feel something different for each of these. You may want them outraged at the peak, but compelled and encouraged to act to address that outrage at the end.

Regardless of subject matter, your goal as a presenter is always to engage the audience. Why should they care about the subject at hand? How does it affect them? Why should they listen to you? What benefit will they gain from what you have to say? You must know the answers to these questions before you begin, and then repeatedly make them clear to your audience as you present. Engage the audience by asking for their opinions and polling them occasionally to gauge their understanding and interest. Make eye contact. Don't just talk at them, involve them. It is important to know your material well enough to be able to adjust your presentation on the fly, as needed, in order to tailor it to the needs of your audience in the moment.

One thing that I try to remember is we as humans will only retain what we find useful/interesting. In my opinion, the main goal must first be to ensure unforgettableness. Whether that is with me, my story, my content, whatever... we must create a sufficient impact on our audience to have any chance of conveying lasting knowledge - I always done better in the classes where I liked my teacher. This connection with the audience will be the 'bridge' our purpose navigates.

A clear takeaway should be established. As Simon Sinek says, 'Know your WHY'... in this case try to understand the audiences Why and align your purpose accordingly.

Always practice many times before.. if you find a buddy who may knows about the topic, ask for help and present it, you can't be audience amd presenter... collect value points. Be close to the same experience. Reinforce the main idea with your concise and slow speaking speed with the important message. The people reacts with the theatrality and you can get the focus on. You control the presentation. If is a unknown concept, questions will fly.

And be passionate about this content! You can make the most mundane so incredibly interesting if you personally have a joy and affinity for it! The audience will pick up on this and respond. The goal is to create a collaborative and positive environment within your audience, and with that comes conversation and not simple questions and answers.

Don't try to bull sxxt or blag your way through a session, be honest with yourself and anyone tasking you to deliver and if you don't know your stuff get someone who does to deliver it... Failing that, set the session to be a hands on fact finding one, get candidates to explore, share their knowledge and skills or contribute their ideas to the little bits you might know

Do a thorough research about the content that is already available and accessible to the audience online / other resources. The attendees would want to either know things they don't already know OR know a new way to do the things they know but are struggling to do.

One thing that helped me facing my fear of public speaking was knowing my content. You'll see how confident you can get when you know exactly what you're talking about and how much you can win, even the toughest crowd, when you show that you're an expert on what you're saying. The audience will feel more comfortable to engage and have actual debates instead of a monosyllabic Q&A (which can be boooooring).

I have found that questioning my work and testing my current knowledge helps me identify areas of improvement. This isn't onto self-condemnation, but rather to reflect on whether I have been growing or have become complacent and/or comfortable. Once I've identified the matter, I feel confident to start a new piece of work... confidently :)

Always be in charge don't let your audience take you to a scope outside your outline. Maintain the frame work and lay a proper background as to areas questions can be asked.

In my experience, I treat a presentation like a theatrical performance. The tone, diction, emphasis, and message is catered to my audience and purpose. I choose language that will elicit emotional connotations depending on the purpose of that sentence or section. Rehearsal is essential for success and that involves practicing in an environment that mimics where the final presentation will be given, if possible. This allows for questions to be posed or examination of whether a point was actually delivered in the manner necessary.

It can be incredibly revealing and helpful to video record yourself doing a presentation, and then reviewing it three times. First, with the sound down, and just watching. Maybe you'll see some body language or physical tics you were previously unaware of that can be distracting (e.g. moving about too much, hopping from foot to foot etc.) Second, with the sound up and not look at the video. Now you might identify some vocal tics, or areas where you are too monotonous, or unclear. Lastly, the content - you can get a transcription of your video to include all the filler words like "umm", or "err", and see where these are being used. Awareness is the first step to being able to communicate clearly without distracting from the message.

Although it was initially a little cringey to listen back to, I actually record myself delivering presentations so I can hear what my audience might read. Do my presentations read and sound well? Does it make sense and sound like it too?

Practice your presentation is the best way to be prepared and boost your confidence. When you practice, you can make your speech and content clearer and didactic for your audience. You can practice on your own, in front of the mirror, and record your speech to see in which parts you can improve. It is also recommended to practice with colleagues or friends and then receive their feedback. The more you practice, the more confident you become!

Preparation can also come from your sphere of influence. Use a LinkedIn post to outline your presentation and topic, and ask your followers/subscribers to offer their questions.

Planning in preparation of something that may not occur is a great testament of one's commitment to something and determination to succeed in excellence.

A valuable presentation tip I've learned is: Step 1: Identify the question you'd least like to be asked. Step 2: Prepare a thoughtful response. I came across this effective technique in a Ted Talk presentation book, and it's an excellent strategy to conquer the Q&A nerves! But remember, your audience doesn't expect you to have all the answers on the spot. If you ever find yourself struggling to respond immediately, it's perfectly acceptable to express gratitude for the question and offer to provide a more detailed answer via email (if online) or set up a one-on-one discussion after your presentation.

Prepare and plan, seems like a no brainer... but something tells me I missed this step several times in the past, it's critical! Now I'm the most prepared person in the room, as the presenter you need to be, you cannot be prepared enough.

If something is not clear go deep on clarification, but follow the timing and rythm, just stay calm they want to learn from you and you will be a teacher... imagine to be the teacher you wanted to be. Just relax and love them.

Don’t be afraid to say that you don’t know; it humanizes you. Be honest when sharing and say you’ll follow up. Then follow through!

In addition, watch the body language of your audience when making points especially those that are related to the objectives of your presentation. This may be an indication of points that you need to clarify, emphasize or elaborate a bit more later on.

One of the most helpful advice I've had when it comes to predicting and answering audience questions is to set yourself up to answer easy questions. More specifically, if you focus on telling a great story and omitting unnecessary details, it can often prompt the audience to ask questions and fill in those details that they may find interesting. Providing too much detail during the presentation, on the other hand, can prompt an audience to dig deep into an area that may be unfamiliar to you.

Start strong! With either a surprising statement, an intriguing question, a short story, an incredible image (if you have slides). Then move into your introduction.

Engage your audience in a discussion in case the agenda and the venue allow it. It might be awkward at the start, but the dialogue between the audience and the presenter can help establish a feeling of belonging, hence the material the presenter has to share will be received much better, and the impact will be deeper.
