Ok, according the topic, we are analyzing the problems of Transport and Network layer. We can use the ping utility to get information for determining the reason of jitter(big difference between responses), clipping(losses). Anyway the abnormal flow of pinging means problems. Broken calls, if we are talking about the Transport, indicate long-term loss of UDP datagram flow. Responses from UDP port can be checked out by netcat utility. So, Network problems may appear in because of routing, firewall, NAT, traffic processing errors or overloading. By analysing the signaling of call or RTP flow we can guess which trouble do we have and where it is. I use the sngrep, tcpdump and sometimes Wireshark. The sngrep is my favorite tool.

In my practice, voip endpoint gateways are not good choice. Softphones are more chipper and mobile then hardware phones, but less reliable. Cisco made good phones and other voip things but Cisco is expensive in maintaining(also other proprietary solutions like NEC, Avaya, Spectralink) Good choice is open source products like Asterisk and Kamailio because of huge community and as a result - better supporting.
