Start with the quantitative data, always include 1-10 or 1-5 questions, depending on your needs, and closed (yes or no) questions that you can effectively measure later to identify patterns and support your storytelling. Once you have these results, start deep diving into the qualitative data. Ensure to have some (not a lot) of open-ended questions asking for feedback, specifics and concrete examples. These should always be optional, as it could negatively affect your response rate otherwise. Review the answers to these questions in detail, use them as testimonials, as examples for product improvement or simply to better understand your data.

Always define 'why', it makes a huge difference in what you are looking at and for. Knowing why helps to define what data you need - we tend to have more data than needed and it generally creates noise rather than insight.

If your forte is not data analysis then ask someone for help. It's fine as your real skill is facilitation; the key is to be keen to improve. A good indicator is the feedback you receive; make sure you have a simple and systematic way to capture this even if it's just "what worked well" and "what could have been better". You can then look for patterns of where to make changes. Once you see an improvement in the most obvious things you can get more sophisticated and work on more difficult areas. Moving forwards is what it's all about

Keep it simple. One mistake people make is to use too many tools and too many ways to analyze the data and end up creating a lot of stuff that doesn't create clear and usable information.

Data hygiene is key, garbage in, garbage out, as simple as that. Also, have an end in mind, know what and how you're going to analyse so you can design how the data is going into the tool, this will save you a lot of time during data analysis later.

In most industry, there is a lot of data and when you revue all of them, you can see that they are not usefull everytime. For me, you must identify the most important KPI for your processus to achieve their results. By using a management system built on ISO 9001 you can identified for each processus part of the company, the KPI to follow. And so, the good one for your company.

Get past the data and into the dialogue, then send them shopping. Data can be treated like brainstorm results, which need to be grouped, then pushed into priority. A neat idea for creating priority is give people spending money. Shopping can open up unique parts of our brains. For example, give them each $100 that they can divide and apply toward the choices.

Read through all the data as many times as you need to understand the data you are looking at. Take notes as you read through the data on things that interest you or jump out at you. Have a highlighter, pen, or pencil handy when reading the documents.

In training, I show a slide crammed with tables and charts: "Who's seen a slide like this before?" Hands go up. "How do you feel?" "Overwhelmed." "Confused". I never hear, "excited." After collecting, collating and cleaning data, a fourth viral step is CURATING data - simplifying it to present a clear message of action: 1. Isolate the key change the data says we need to make - this is your main message. Structure any report around communicating one simple, main point. 2. Use visual design and storytelling to make the message memorable. 3. Consider different audience needs - accessibility and communication styles. A brief, punchy report of the main headlines will work for some, followed by appendices for the conscientious.

I love info graphics.. but only when done well! I've been asked so many times to 'get this report down to one page' and that just means the same info in a smaller font. Be colourful when presenting. Use different fonts. Use pictures. Make use of the notes section.. and if you're presenting information then use your skills and any reports as prompts, not a journal for all to read. Modern tools help to share info and there are many more exciting options to beat the ubiquitous PowerPoint. (Sorry MS!)

I have found that using both quantitative AND qualitative data is more effective than using one or the other because stakeholders have different preferences for what kind of data they find compelling. In addition to appealing to different preferences, using both types of data provides explanations and context, along with perceived validity, that stimulates rich, in -depth discussion leading to better outcomes for decision-making.

Data is an important evaluation tool. But as a facilitator, you're also directly involved with the event. Make sure you don't discount your own experience.

Align the learning objectives with the data collection plan. You’ll have to design questions that will help you you evaluate if your learners met intended LOs. Whether it’s sentiment data or retention, if you don’t align the LOs with your collection planning, your efforts will be futile.
