How can you align project management with requirements engineering and analysis?

When capturing requirements, it's critical teams fully comprehend scope and objectives. As PM, diving deeper with engineers and analysts on key business drivers and pain points provides valuable context that leads to better solutioning. Understanding where existing workflows fall short or metrics that need improvement helps shape technical decisions. Focusing requirements on actual needs versus hypotheticals ensures effort is invested in areas providing highest value. With deeper insights, engineers and analysts can propose approaches that directly alleviate major frustrations rather than generic features. Their buy-in on objectives sets the stage for partnerships to deliver the most optimal solutions.

To ensure successful planning & scheduling, it is important to first understand the scope, initial LOEs, and desired MVP. Once this is clear, having the right stakeholders in the room to analyze both functional and business requirements is the next step. Followed by concise technical documentation for implementation, which will allow identification & tracking of changes. With these foundations, handling unforeseen risks, challenges, changes is more manageable.

Making sure that project management works well with understanding what's needed and analyzing it means including these two things together from the start, figuring out what's most important, keeping track of how everything connects, being ready to handle any changes that come up, talking and working together with everyone involved, using tools that help, and always trying to do better by listening to feedback.

In my experience, particularly in agile software development, the customer often has basic objectives but insufficient detail to provide specific, and certainly not comprehensive, requirements. That is not a problem in agile, assuming of course that you have a commitment from customer on how you will work together to define the scope and the criteria that will bound the solution (e.g. time and cost). The most beneficial processes I have found in securing that commitment is to examine the unknowns and assumptions both sides are making, clarify where there exist discrepancies, remove uncertainty where possible, then agree on an approach to deal with those that remain or arise during execution. Continual open dialogue is key.
