How can you align leadership development programs with the changing landscape of higher education?

My suggestion is to have a realistic mapping of the needs and expectations of the current generation and to see if the faculty/leadership is equipped to address them. Leadership development programs should focus on equipping ourselves to manage the diversity of educational landscapes and creating an equitable and inclusive space for everyone.

Try as we may, education planning tends to be a projection of our own POV. The downside is that we might plan minutely, but in vain. There is no substitute for understanding the larger economic, cultural and technological challenges before us. For sure, experts disagree. I suggest watching the career pathways of successful grads. Additionally, prioritize adaptability, interdisciplinary collaboration, global perspectives, and sustainable practices in program design. Encourage lifelong learning and emphasize data analytics for evidence-based decision-making, reflecting contemporary trends in education and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Start by having a solid awareness of the state of higher education today. This covers educational trends, difficulties, and cutting-edge technologies. Find out what kind of leadership abilities and traits are needed in the ever-changing higher education environment. Think about elements like changing student demographics, diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as digital transformation. Promote creativity and innovation in leadership programmes. Encourage leaders to consider innovative solutions to difficult problems in higher education. To determine whether leadership development programmes are effective, establish specific performance indicators and evaluation procedures. Utilise data and feedback to continuously improve.

Evaluate and adapt: Assess the effectiveness of your leadership development programs on a regular basis. Collect participant comments, track outcomes, and assess the impact on leadership capabilities and institutional performance. Use the knowledge gathered to improve and adjust the programs to meet changing needs.

A good leadership development programme will consider the whole person development of each person. One-to-one session(s) that help the participants to be reflective of who they are/what their passions/ or strengths are / or the challenges they face can result in tailor-made support programs that will be more impactful both for the individual and also for the organization. It was one such training I received, that transformed the way I started working. I learned the power of reflective thinking from my coach and that have nurtured mindfulness in me.

My viewpoint is that any training/ education should be demand based not supply based, same applies for the LDP and MDP. Periodic systematically driven Leadership Development and Management Development Programs should be administered to all levels of management in any education system or organisation. Simulation techniques should be incorporated in this ever changing VUCA world.

Leadership development can be primarily in the areas of Skills and or Values . Depending on the current level of the participant and after discussing with him/them, appropriate type of course/s can be planned.

Our workplaces are multicultural and I feel that diversity is one of the most complex terms to define. There will be visible and invisible forms of diversity. Being trained so that leaders will not end up with unconscious bias is crucial in any organization. A leader should be equipped to engage diverse and inclusive perspectives with the same magnanimity to everyone.

What does this actually mean? I‘m in my 50s now. My whole life as a black woman I have been subjected to I don’t know how many ‘diversity‘ initiatives in too many different companies and organisations to count. None of these lovely paragraphs of guilt soothing words, addresses any real problems that I have faced in my years of being one of the few, or more often than not, the only, black face in the room. I’m rarely, if ever, consulted on these policies, on the rare occasions I was included, my voice was ignored.
