No matter how good your incentive plan is, if it doesn't align with organizational cultures and values, it's going to fall flat on your face. So, the very first step in any strategic alliance is to have a clear set of common culture and values and it should be communicated well. Every decision which is made should align with those agreed common values. However, one should have an agile approach towards it, keeping core values intact as the business environment can change and the alliance's objectives may need to evolve over time.

The third step to align incentives is to balance the power and control of the partners, and ensure that they have equal and fair representation and influence in the alliance.
