How can you advance your career by leveraging your architectural skills?

In my perspective, understanding the specific facets of your work that bring you the most joy is essential for long-term job satisfaction. This awareness empowers you to harmonize your career decisions with your passion, providing a robust foundation for ongoing self-improvement. Personally, I have discovered the value of integrating my skills with my interests, aiming to explore and expand the boundaries where these two domains intersect.

There are several strategies you can consider. First, prioritize continuous learning by staying updated with the latest trends, technologies, and best practices in architecture. Also building a strong professional network within the architecture industry by attending industry events and joining architectural associations. Additionally, identify specific areas of architecture that interest you and develop expertise in those areas. Moreover, seek out opportunities for professional development, such as leadership training, project management courses, or business skills workshops. Lastly, find a mentor who can provide guidance, advice, and support as you navigate your architectural career.

As a life-time student and young practitioner, one of the biggest challenges I had at first, which later became my best quality, is the ability to know and understand myself first as a person, then as a creative or architect, before making decisions on what to pursue in my career, studies and other aspects of my life. Knowing yourself will allow you to identify with more clarity where to spend your energy and what exactly you should aim to get from anything.

Leveraging your architectural skills to advance your career involves a combination of technical proficiency, soft skills, networking, and continuous learning. Remember that career advancement is a continuous process, and staying proactive in your professional development will help you stand out in the competitive field of architecture.

In addition to the above, sometimes it is difficult to know what are the things that we may excel at or that distinguish us from others. Therefore, the most important method from my point of view may be to experiment. The experiment will help you test your knowledge or interest in a particular field, and will also give you a broader vision of the field , whether the experience is successful or not, there is always an opportunity to learn .

Relationships are key in this field. Get out in your local community and meet people and help them where you can. Use your skills to help out in a local 501C3 organization like Rotary or some other club doing good in the community. This will not only build your leadership skills, but will get you around influential people to build solid relationships.

Elevate your architectural career by expanding your network. Attend industry events, engage on platforms like LinkedIn, and collaborate on projects. Building connections enhances visibility, opening doors to opportunities and keeping you informed about industry trends.

Don't just focus on architecture but rather the challenge or issues you want to be part of. Improving the quality of cities, learning environments, sense of home and community, the envvironmental footprint of what we do are examples. Not all these involve just engagement with peers in the industry- necessarily they sometimes require you to go beyond. Engage in policy debate, self guided and sometimes self-funded as well as structured research and study of specialist areas and issues maybe needed to access opportunities. Developing collaborative skills is critical.

One thing I always like to highlight is that architecture is all about connections. The network you make on your path as a professional will open or close doors in your near future. And of course, you must be seen to be remembered, so go and show off your skills, always with humility and competence. And mostly treat people around you with respect, no matter their background.

Your network is your net worth. Often used by those who swear by the power of networking, because it is true! Whether employed or a business owner, getting known, creating relationships and being able to bring in more work for you/ your company will lead to greater career & personal development opportunities. As an employee, your ability to bring in more fee-earning opportunities for your company will put you above your competition for promotion & pay rises. An owner, networking can make you an expert when attending the right events, find new ideas & strategies you never knew existed. For me, the best events to find new clients are property investment and developer led meetings. Understand their pain points to improve your offerings

In architecture, our projects often reach a point where a new perspective becomes crucial. It helps break free from your usual thought patterns and expands your creativity to new horizons. Feedback becomes a chance to enhance your skills, find inventive solutions to challenges, and refine your ideas to perfectly match the context. It fosters adaptability, deeper understanding, and improved communication skills in the field. Also, learning new skills broadens an architect’s knowledge base, allowing them to take on a wider range of projects and roles within the field.

Development of communication and leadership skills: Communication skills and leadership are two basic skills in the field of architecture. You must be able to communicate well with clients, colleagues and project teams and be able to guide them. Also, participating in conferences, architectural exhibitions and other industrial events is a good opportunity to expand knowledge and connect with successful people in this field. In these events, you can meet new colleagues, benefit from their experiences and look for new career opportunities. Also, participating in architectural challenges and competitions is a good opportunity to improve skills and gain experience in different fields.

Sometimes a harsh point of view is healthy for the development of your career as an architect. This does not mean that you should not defend your work, but take the opinion of others into account, as it is a free opportunity for development.

Many roles within the world of architecture and design include leadership qualities in one capacity or another, from the lead Designer to the intern. Whether it's to help drive consultants towards the full concept of a space to achieve the clients brief, working within a large team where you may be responsible for one element and ensuring other aspects or services work well for that element to function, working with contractors, joinery manufacturers, upholsters, and everything in between. Hone in on your leadership style and develop your communication skills to aid a positive and well considered project to completion. Another key aspect is learning to listen and collaborate with other experts of their field pulling their ideas together

In my experience these point are crucial for developing soft skills as an architect: - Prioritise communication, teamwork, and client relations. - Practice active listening and seek feedback for improvement. - Engage in diverse projects to enhance adaptability and resilience. - Develop effective presentation skills for clear design communication. - Attend workshops to refine your soft skills.

Architects are well trained problem solvers and design thinkers, complimented by our skills in planning, design, and construction while working with and leading teams in implementation of projects. These are invaluable skills to many organizations, corporations and businesses outside the traditional practice of architecture. I made the move to the "Owner's" side to lead the planning, design, construction and real estate for a large academic research medical center and health system where I am able to serve the mission - not just the project. While I have administrative and executive responsibilities to fulfill, I am still practicing architecture and leading our teams in planning and implementing project work all across our system of care.

Architects can explore alternative paths such as urban planning, real estate development, sustainability consulting, digital design, interior design, project management, writing, teaching, heritage conservation, and construction technology. These options apply architectural skills in diverse and effective ways. However, you should consider your interests and how you can present yourself in that direction.

I have seen many go into great careers, in teaching and research, design management and construction, development, campus and facilties management as well as into related areas such as the creation of virtual worlds in film and video games and politics, and public service where the capacity to think laterally and deal with complexity is highly valued.

Many of my friends who studied architecture have ventured into careers seemingly distant from traditional architectural work, with some even leaving the field. I remind them that their architectural education has provided invaluable skills and a unique life perspective, beneficial to their professional journeys. Architectural training goes beyond building design; it hones creative problem-solving, aesthetic sensibility, and complex project management. These skills are applicable in diverse fields, including urban design and engineering. Exploring alternative or complementary paths is not just feasible but a natural progression from architectural training, offering new opportunities and enriching both professional and personal life.

I switched careers often and could always apply the learned problem solving skills. So instead of focusing what separates the different career paths, focus on the similarities and the patterns that stay the same.

Having a 3 and 5 year plan for me waas always invaluable that I would review annually as a loose framework to guide priorities for action

Pro tip: Please don’t. Architecture means long hours, toxic environnement, people and culture and low pay. Unless you plan to own your own firm or work as a one man business, it’s not worth it.

Break the boundaries of the role, explore, analyze beyond your specific scope, as an architect you can have an integral view of the projects, this perspective will help you find opportunities to grow and develop your skills.
