How can you address power imbalances in servant leadership?

Leadership is a responsibility and not authority and if the leaders of an organization understand this basic principal, the organization can move in to the right direction.

Ich spreche daher lieber von dienlicher Führung als von dienender. So denken wir weniger über Hierarchien und Machtgefüge nach. Wer hat welche Rolle im Unternehmen und wie üben die Menschen ihren Einfluss aus. Die Hierarchie spielt hier keine Hauptrolle.

The Spiderman movie series said it best: "With great power comes great responsibility.". It's imperative for leaders to understand that you can encourage or demoralize your followers on a daily basis, whether it be explicitly, implicitly, or both. A true leader inspires others to succeed by their actions. Too many leaders think their words are more important, however, I've learned that it's possible to speak volumes without saying anything, but rather by taking actions that will benefit people other than yourself.

I have seen few leaders who are humble enough to share power. And make no mistake, having a senior level title at an organization does not make anyone a leader on its own. True leaders understand that others do their best when given autonomy and that is part of my leadership practice. No one is happy being micromanaged and left out of important decisions that affect their life or daily work experience.

True leader who share power must have the knowledge with whom they can share power with. As they are responsible for others actions. Sharing power also involve relying on others for decision making and supporting them. Hence it is good to share but must be thoughtful with whom to share.

In my experience it is important to understand that in addressing power imbalances within servant leadership is sharing of power with others rather than hoarding or misusing it. This involves empowering individuals with the autonomy, resources, and support necessary for task performance, goal achievement, and personal growth. Shared power goes beyond mere delegation, it encompasses involving others in decision making processes, actively listening to their perspectives, and respecting their diversity and dignity. Importantly, sharing power does not diminish a leaders responsibility or authority, instead, it fosters a more democratic and participatory environment.

As a scrum master,we need to empower team members. To empower team members, we need to start trusting them. I know it sounds simple,but I have seen leaders not trusting their team members. Without trusting,there is no way we can provide autonomy to team. Some people in team members show leadership quality.We need to appreciate them & start empowering them bit more irrespective of their experience/designation.It will motivate them & also will inspire other team members to follow their lead. Finally,we need tobe free of biasing as a leader.It is impossible to be 100 perfect unbiased,but we need to try our best to be unbiased as best as possible.It will help create a good team culture & team will be more confident to take their own decisions.

The challenge for me as an autistic person is that I've been marginalized in previous jobs (not my current one). I believe that the neurodivergent community needs to feel empowered to strive towards our goals, however, it's more common to be belittled for actually having them. The most common power imbalance in neurodiversity hiring initiatives comes in the form of "Here's a job, don't expect to move up", or worse "You'll never be promoted, no matter what you do". As a leader, you are supposed to address this imbalance, not encourage it, yet too many corporate leaders don't do so. By the way, the same problem applies to all other marginalized groups.

When transparent boundaries create safety through thoughtful structures, people can become more consciously supportive of creating and maintaining justice within organizations to promote smooth and healthy work environments for all. (Which, of course, promotes the best possible work, with the most efficiency and fun along the way.) The more clarity and thoughtfulness the earliest possible, the more conscious people can become. (So if you haven't done something thoughtful yet, now is the time to start.) It is not the work of the oppressed or marginalized to teach everyone else how to be fair. Organizations and resources can be pulled in to help ensure proper awareness, education, and change happens, so growth can be positive and inclusive.

Every organization has rules, processes, and practices. As a result, there is a need to assess and implement a diversity audit method for identifying and addressing power imbalances. This allows you to obtain a deeper grasp of any sections of the company in terms of inclusion and equity.

Leaders who are incredibly involved with their teams never stop learning. Their characteristics is to be respectful towards the staff and be curious and humble. Leaders who appreciate the value and diversity of others and recognize their contributions and achievements take the team together to higher success.

Giving everyone a voice - Servant leaders must provide everyone the opportunity to speak. Opening the discourse (discussion) allows everyone to build the confidence to offer their thoughts while feeling safe, dignified, and useful. Hearing thoughts provides a clear picture of what works effectively for the company and where we may improve.

Lead by example. Servant leaders always showcase the behavior and thus inspiring others to follow. Modeling servant leadership helps to create a positive impact.

Knowing yourself and your limitations is the best way to exercise your power and ensure it's balance in the organisation. When a leader is open to receive feedback on his actions and learn to improve ,he becomes the model for servent leadership in his team.

Servant leadership means to me that I lead by my actions, not by my words. As an autistic man, I find that my communication skills are not the same as a neurotypical person, so I'm better off focusing on what I can do rather than what I say. If people see that I am doing my role as a leader well and encourage others to contribute their own leadership skills as a team, then I've done what I set out to do.

The greatest leaders I know are incredibly humble, present, and value focused. Their excellence of character doesn't end with the work day. They hold others to be subject matter experts in their own lives and ask more questions when many would speak from opinion. They try to see issues from alternative viewpoints, and this protects them from judgmental attitudes. They welcome all criticism, good or bad, and are grateful for it. They treat strangers like good friends and their team like family.

Things that I have found helpful: 1. Service over self-interest : The desire to help others, rather than the desire to attain power and control over others. 2. Effective listening : Servant leaders don't impose their will on other rather they listen carefully to the problems others are facing and then engage in to find the best course of action. 3.Empathy : One must put his/her self in the shoes of others and sincerly listen to their viewpoints and needs.

Occasionally bring in external facilitators or consultants to assess and provide insights into power dynamics within the team. An external perspective can offer valuable recommendations for improvement.

One example of Servant leadership that comes to my mind is that of MS Dhoni grom world of cricket. He was appointed captain when there were heavy weights in the team. By following attributes of servant leadership like leading by example, sharing limelight with others, continuous learning he quickly built a cohesive team which went on to win 3 ICC trophies and became no 1 team in test cricketing format.

Remember that Servant Leadership is a Leadership Theory, not the truth of Leadership. Leaders will have authorities by virtue of their positions, according to policies. Leaders also have to consider who they are serving primarily and why for any decision they make. Leaders must also consider legal/compliance issues and ethical/moral issues as well. Those all impact the power balances regarding what should, or should not, be done.

Servant leadership in business, is to look at the insurance company Aflac, Southwest airlines, and Chik,fil,la, all these company work with the employees to help the company move forward, when their competition is going under. They bring their staff together and solicit their help. Many money saving solutions come from within, not from top down. Listening to everyone and allowing everyone to have a voice, will make a difference in moral and productivity.
