How can you adapt your project management style to work with a team from a different culture?

Having grown up as a Latina immersed in both American and Mexican cultures, I have come to understand the significance of self-awareness and the importance of avoiding assumptions about individuals from a particular culture. It is crucial to recognize that culture impacts our daily lives but not all people from a specific culture have the same beliefs, values, norms, and practices. By understanding that cultural nuances exist and approaching conversations with curiosity and an open mind, we can establish a solid foundation for engaging in culturally sensitive and compassionate dialogue.

As a social worker, self-awareness of my own cultural values, beliefs, and project management practices is crucial. Understanding how I communicate, make decisions, handle conflicts, and navigate uncertainty is essential. This self-awareness allows me to identify strengths and weaknesses, preventing the imposition of assumptions or expectations on team members. I should learn about other culture and have a clear picture to avoid misunderstanding. I can start learning by online websites, courses and YouTube videos. Will be great idea to have a coffee with them, start discussion and ask polite questions about what is good, what is better and how improve way of working in term different cultures. I should be flexible and fully open mind.

Through my career I’ve worked on teams where an outsider came in and made wholesale changes without understanding current culture or needs of the team. This easily alienates the existing team. Taking time to feel out the team before making decisions builds trust in uncertainty. Meet one on one to discuss vision, needs and communication styles allows for future success.

I think this is the most important thing. Understand the nuances of different cultures. Find a person that comes from the culture you are faced with that you may know on a more personal level and are comfortable asking about it.
