1 Define the scope and boundaries

The first step is to define the scope and boundaries of the report, which means deciding what aspects of the company's operations, products and services are relevant and material for the environmental impact assessment. You can use frameworks such as the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) or the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB) to identify the topics and indicators that are most applicable to your client's industry and stakeholders. You should also clarify the reporting period, the geographical coverage, the organizational units and the data sources that will be included in the report.

A very practical approach regardless of the Scope - 1) Apply SDGs & ESG framework. 2) Detail out the magnitude of the impact, cause and effect the impact (RICE framework) and only then strategically position the impact. Since not all impact get reflected well in a report. No client will want this. 3) Accurate impact representation should align primarily with the company's sustainability goals. hence, suggest improvements in a tangible plan to reduce the impact in the report call outs.

You should use reliable and consistent methods and tools to quantify the environmental impact of your client's activities, such as their greenhouse gas emissions, water consumption, waste generation, energy use and biodiversity loss.
