En vez de alinear con estrellas es mejor hacerlo con galaxias, una alineación basta con estrellas pueden servir pero por el efecto del paralage y el movimiento propio por poco que sea inducirá a más imprecisión que si se hace con un objeto muy lejano como una galaxia. Una nave puede determinar si situación exacta centrándose sobre la situación de las estrellas y luego obtener una situación mas exacta calibrando sobre las galaxias. Una alineación así de precisa podría servir para técnicas de interferometría para hacer telescopios y radiotelescopios del tama?o de la órbita solar terrestre.
