1 What are Voronoi diagrams?

A Voronoi diagram is a way of dividing a plane into regions called Voronoi cells, based on a set of points called Voronoi sites. Each Voronoi cell contains one Voronoi site, and consists of all the points that are closer to that site than to any other site. 2 How are Voronoi diagrams constructed?

There are several algorithms for constructing Voronoi diagrams, but one of the most common and efficient ones is the Fortune's algorithm. This algorithm uses a sweep line that moves from top to bottom of the plane, and maintains a data structure called a beach line that represents the boundary of the Voronoi cells. As the sweep line encounters a new site, it creates a new Voronoi cell and updates the beach line accordingly. As the sweep line moves, it also detects the intersection points of the Voronoi cells, which form the edges of the diagram. The algorithm runs in O(n log n) time, where n is the number of sites.
