1 Show, don't tell

One of the most basic principles of visual storytelling is to show, not tell. This means that instead of relying on dialogue or narration to explain what a character is feeling, thinking, or doing, you use visual elements to reveal their personality, motivation, and transformation. For example, you can use lighting, color, composition, camera angles, and editing to create contrast, mood, focus, and movement that reflect your character's inner state and arc. My two favorite ways are through styling and tone of voice; By styling you can tell alot, the hair cut, the face, the outfits, they can all tell the story. They can explain how the character developed usually it should take time to notice (eg in a series). As for the tone of voice, its a little tricky however it can also be reached easily. The way a character talks tells alot about his personality the way he reacts or how he expresses his emotions. These two hand in hand build an image in the subconscious of the audience and makes them accept the new character as it develops.

Film school teaches us some good habits in this area, although I've never attended. I've only performed in movies cast at my alma mater, USC. First, tell your story without dialogue. If you can write in active voice and describe what's going on without the need for words, you're 90% of the way there. This should be easy to do.

This is mostly a plot driven device. Either your hero is already ready to take on the task, or she isn't. As the topic here is character development, it may be more interesting to watch our hero learn as they go through the ordeals, as opposed to being thrust into them via a convenient contrivance. Yes, I know that's practically a redundancy, however, I've seen too many stories fall into exactly this formulaic trap.

This goes back to, "Show, don't tell." I believe it was Rod Serling that said, "Never underestimate the intelligence of your audience." If you can successfully visualize what your character will do in any given situation, and not overly explain what it means to your intended audience, then you'll have created an unforgettable character.
