How can VFX help filmmakers create a unique sense of identity?

I think the more you explore the parameters of the technology, the perhaps harder to digest but honest material is what we should be striving for in all our work.

This is an interesting topic which I hadn’t really thought of this way before, but to add to this…I would say more broadly this is helping to establish your universe in which your story exists. Using VFX, and I would add SFX to that as well, to establish “what is” in the world where your story exists deepens the immersive experience. On top of The Matrix, I would add A Scanner Darkly, and an example of SFX would even be Home Alone. The slapstick level of the comedy is not realistic to the real world but is sellable as real in the story and is part of that. Similarly Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon which similarly used wires for unique look and feel of their world. I would say these are more “unique” in identity than say Avatar was.
