How can System Architecture team managers nurture their team members' growth?

In my experience, the best way to develop teams is to delegate your responsibilities and pair with them on specific tasks that aren't mission critical but allow your mentees to learn about process, approach, methodology and documentation. Sometimes grunt work like API documentation, system and architecture diagrams, cloud infra setup etc. is a great way to delegate and allow mentees to understand the building blocks of a system. Also, it is important to groom them on system design intuition which is the ability to understand the bigger picture - business constraints, risks, security, data governance and user buy in; When designing a system that meets the requirements.

In a field often focused on technical prowess, the importance of soft skills like communication, teamwork, and problem-solving is sometimes overlooked. I ensure that my team receives training and opportunities to develop these skills, which are crucial for their overall professional effectiveness. Recognising that each team member has unique career aspirations, I work with them to create personalised development plans. This involves setting specific, measurable, and achievable goals tailored to their individual career paths. Encourage experimentation and innovation. I organise regular hackathons and brainstorming sessions, where team members can explore new ideas and technologies without the pressure of project deadlines

System Architecture team managers can foster the growth of their team members in several ways, but the main way, which is difficult to see made explicit, is to lead by example. - okay to provide learning opportunities, but if the team manager throws himself into the fray, if he shows how he himself learns new things, he will imprint the team with the logic of learning; - agree to promote collaboration, but if the team manager himself shows how collaborative he is, he will imprint the group with the ethics of collaboration; - agree to support career development, but the team manager should be a shining example of how a career has been supported.
