"What doesn't get measured, doesn't get managed" Scope 1,2 & 3 measurements require a vast amount of data to be measured accurately in order for a company to get a full report analysis of their emissions. One of the main challenges is gathering that data and making sure it is accurate. Take for example Scope 3 emissions that come from supply chain, for a company to know its full scope 3 emissions they need to have their supplier measure their personal scope 1 & 2 emissions.

While measurement and reporting is one aspect of it, the actual focus should be emission reduction by creating a reduction strategy (not using carbon offsets only) and focusing on environmental efficiency.

For scope 3 emissions, the GHG standard recommends that companies identify the Scope 3 activities that are expected to have the most significant GHG emissions, offer the most significant GHG reduction opportunities, and are most relevant to the company’s business goals. This can be done by determining the size of emissions in each of the GHG Protocol’s 15 categories of Scope 3 emissions and refining emission estimates accordingly. The Scope 3 Standard also offers advice on how to choose the right calculation method: Spend-Based, Fuel-Based, Activity-Based, Supplier-Specific and Hybrid Method.

The GHG Protocol Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard is an excellent resource for calculating and reporting on all three scopes of GHG emissions.

Consider that reporting, whether voluntary or mandatory, and all regulation in general is a means to an end.
