Make a check of what the conflict is truly about. Is it something that refers to the value system or is it an operational or perceptional mismatch in how the parties see a given situation? Do not rush to conclusions. It is important that each of the parties present their point of view. Allow yourself to go deep into the issues, but do not get entangled in unnecessary details. Be levelheaded to differentiate facts, opinions, and emotions. Acknowledge the facts, respect opinions, and do not let emotions manage the situation. When mediating, you will also become part of the conflict. Make sure that you do not act based on your own personal views, but be open and objective. If needed, find someone neutral to discuss the situation with.

Conflict resolution is one of the key skills that a leader (in general) needs to build and develop. Conflict is a great opportunity and a healthy mean to generate more ideas and enhance collaborative innovation. As a sustainability professional (or any other professional), when you encounter a conflict, you should embrace it (consider it a way to promote diversity and inclusion of opposing views). Put all the views on the table (facts and assumptions), analyze the options from all possible dimensions (e.g., make a SWOT), pick everyone's brain and draw a concrete conclusion. Being a sustainability professional is a hard gig - we have to ensure sustainable outcomes apply across our reporting and strategy, but we also have competing priorities across the company. Cost, quality often come before sustainable decision-making. ?To ensure buy-in, it's important to understand the point of resistance: why is this recommendation hard to take on board? How can sustainability work as a value-add? ?A past client had issues with a recommendation for a sustainable certification because they were 'already sustainable', but they found the value-add when they realised the certification helped them with their traceability issues. It was less about looking sustainable, more on helping them stay operationally efficient.

Applying a sustainability mindset means considering the long-term impacts and ethical implications of decisions. In resolving conflicts, this involves finding solutions that are not only effective in the short term but also sustainable and beneficial in the long run. This approach resonates with my belief in balancing immediate needs with future well-being, ensuring decisions are holistic and forward-looking.

We need to understand first what collaborative problem solving means. My definition is that we involve people with different backgrounds, people from different functions, experienced professionals, young talents etc. I talk about diversity. When you have right type of people working together and you get rid of silos, also problem solving becomes much easier.

Conflicts give us room to grow. Gathering critical feedback is crucial in good process management. In my sustainability reporting process, I use the PDCA (Deming wheel) method. The PDCA Cycle (Plan-Do-Check-Act) is a systematic process for gaining valuable learning and knowledge for the continual improvement of a product, process, or service.

Viewing conflict as an opportunity for learning and growth is a valuable perspective. In my experience, reflecting on conflicts and their resolutions has provided insights into team dynamics and individual perspectives. This learning process enhances future collaboration and conflict management, resonating with my belief in continuous improvement and adaptive learning.

Creating an environment where team members feel safe to express their vulnerabilities & uncertainties can cultivate better understanding. I've encouraged teams to share their challenges & doubts openly, which not only helped in resolving conflicts but also strengthened team bonds. Seeing it this way will also help you – as the mediator – to see what is valuable in each of the points of view and come up with a solution that will bring more understanding, cooperation and synergy. It is a great tribute to a leader and corporate culture when people feel safe enough to express their opinions and be in conflict with others knowing that there will be safe ground for them to recover after an argument. This may create more value than keeping their thoughts to themselves.
