How can IT Strategists thrive in a hybrid work environment?

Our most of customers are governmental or big organizations and it is very difficult for us to get acceptance from them to work on hybrid model and based on this need, I try to learn more about cloud and advantages with public point of view to learn them more about capabilities which will be insert with using this capacity.

To work hybrid you need to first demonstrate through a pilot that it is possible & it does not reduce efficiency or productivity. Then get customer and stakeholder buy in. It all boils down to leadership eventually. Working hybrid is not a science but an art & very few can pull it off.

Achieving a harmonious blend of digital and physical realms is vital for sustained engagement and evolving experiences. Simplifying access to technologies, particularly the "cloud," is crucial, emphasizing simplicity, seamlessness, and availability. Utilize Know Your Client (KYC) to comprehend client feedback in hybrid work, bolstered by quantifiable success indicators. Recognize that the medium is the sole distinction between you and the client. To enhance your presence with customers, embed cybersecurity, privacy, and availability into systems and processes by default and design. Involving the base of the pyramid fosters innovation and dismantles barriers to change.

To excel in a hybrid work environment, IT strategists must first thoroughly assess IT needs and risks: - Identify Key Requirements: Assess bandwidth, devices, software, data, and security needs for both remote and in-office workers. - Gap Analysis: Determine priorities and gaps in current IT infrastructure and services. - Plan and Budget: Strategize and allocate resources based on identified needs. - Conduct Regular Audits: Monitor effectiveness and efficiency of IT systems and address arising issues promptly.

While leading a large technical team, a robust communication strategy was vital during our shift from a monolith application to a network of microservices in a distributed system. Using collaboration tools and Teams for standup meetings and focused smaller groups enhanced productivity. Despite the change, our project maintained its course, requiring heightened project control. While losing casual conversations, we scheduled individual discussions and set a communication window for stakeholders, project managers, and developers, ensuring effective handling of specific matters.

Communication with KEY stakeholders is not essential: communication with ALL stakeholders is! Yes, many business leaders will have a stronger view on what IT needs the business has, and IT strategists should both listen to also educate them. But all users of IT, or all 'customers' of the IT function have a view on what is wrong with what they have, and what they need. Furthermore, no IT change will be successfully implemented unless the users understand it, accept it, and change the way that they work in order to embrace it. That change journey starts with them feeling some ownership of the new thing which means engaging them in the creation of it is key.

Always important, but especially in a hybrid environment, you need to know and meet your audiences where they are... take the initiative, be the instigator, as well as tailor the message to each audience appropriately. Use common vocabulary so people can connect dots. I'd advise you to listen to them first, build the relationship first before you try to steer them in any particular direction. If you are 'selling' a new strategy... remember you are in Sales. Leverage strategies from sales/marketing profession. They apply in every way.

If the work is truly 'hybrid' and team members are spread across the country (or across the world), the underlying business infrastructure needs to be highly resilient and scalable. Cloud environment or cloud-native best practices should be used when architecting and deploying the infrastructure. "Cloud" practices though do not translate to require a CSP. You can build and run the infrastructure on-prem at your main locations. However, the business infrastructure stack needs cloud-level resiliency and that must be part of your overall design.

Flexibility and the ability to pivot is key to any successful IT strategy. When the Covid pandemic thrust remote work onto us all, those organisations whose IT strategy enabled them to pivot to support individual, remote working, with secure collaboration were the ones that thrived. Cloud solutions not only provide secure connectivity over the internet, but provide the fastest-changing capabilities of any solutions. On-prem solutions will always adhere to long-term investment cycles which make them inherently inflexible.

Trust your team, let them know you trust them. Give them freedom to execute. In hybrid, remote or office environments trust is the main fuel. People will find ways to develop skills if you trust them, people will find creative solutions if you trust them, people will ask for help if you trust them. For me the answer is as simple as this.

Most enterprises have moved to a partial or complete hybrid work since the pandemic. While it has reduced in person Connect’s but it has increased the time people spend with their families due to the lack of daily commute. Said that, change is constant, so the best way is to enable this transformation with online and offline collaboration, creating a cultural shift where teams feel the need to come in when it’s truly required. Have seen multiple innovative strategies like parallel career paths, transition to a different role and many others. Creating an environment for employees to thrive is key and most successful with their retention and satisfaction. Satisfied teams build great products and deliver more outcomes.

For me its about maintaining a life outside of work, that sometimes involves people I work with and often it includes other people too. I am a keen cyclist, and use that to expend excess energy and to thrash out the adrenilin. For me it brings a clear mind and often in the race to get somewhere it brings the answer to a puzzling problem. When I socialise with work colleagues I hold off work conversations they are for office and those that try I defer it until the office. My effort is to help us find other common ground and get relief to work. Its about freeing our minds from those challenges, allowing us to find clarity and peace.

Hybrid work has been one of the biggest enablers of an improved work / life balance for decades. So long as our employers have the right attitude, we can now take back time from our old commutes to both be more productive at work as well as supporting the needs of our families. We can flex our time to do the school run yet still deliver what we need to throughout the day. We can join a meeting from the car or the train. We can communicate asynchronously on out own schedule rather than needing to attend that project meeting that was just all about progress updates. All of that is delivered through technology. But we need to delineate between work and home. Tools like Microsoft Viva enable us to do that, so IT can support that too.

Take control! Take time to understand the opportunities in front of you - and your organisation. From your perspective, there is the opportunity to secure the 'best of both worlds' and by that I mean making sure that whenever/wherever you choose to think, work and collaborate you are making the most of the environment you're in. Schedule your time carefully, when does being in person benefit most, what are the benefits of remote working and tailor your time to fit. Different outcomes need different approaches, forcing a square peg in a round hole can happen with enough effort but it's better to find right time (place), for the right work.

For me it's all about people, the team really deliver when they know their boss will stand up for them and share the burden of the tasks in hand. I do that for my teams, I help my teams to breathe and I work on communicating with stakeholders and sources to bring a clear goal to the team who are the solutions experts to deliver the technicalities of the solution to life. Together we deliver quickly and efficiently. Without each other we might be able to make it work, but it would be struggle. I know my team in detail and they know me, both in a work-related and personal setting, its my job to make them comfortable and free to deliver. We thrive and struggle together and it works.

For me, IT Strategists can excel in a hybrid work setup by giving importance to certain factors. To begin with, focus on implementing strong cybersecurity measures to protect data in both remote and on-site locations. Encourage smooth collaboration by utilizing integrated communication tools and virtual platforms. Give priority to training employees on digital skills to improve their adaptability. Make sure that the IT infrastructure is scalable enough to support different work models. Stay updated on emerging technologies to foster continuous innovation. Lastly, adopt a flexible and empathetic approach to understand the diverse needs of employees in a hybrid environment, which will help in successfully implementing IT strategies.
